Coming clean.

  • i have to ask one thing in this thread...what is the better position to take? to be on the fense about something that is of some, but mostly little, concern to me or to voice an opinion that is not well educated?

I dont really like either scenario...I do know that anyone who holds themsleves out to be a celebrity at any activity will gather a lot of haters in the process and is subject to A LOT more scrutiny because of the attention they have sought out themselves...

I personally dont care about depth freediving, I presonally do not like cheaters, but, and it is a big but, I dont know anything about someone cheating I wont add any fuel to the fire.

If this is about someone tarnishing the reputation of the sport, that does matter to me. Baja seems to be suggesting that there is more to this than just competitve freediving and that does effect us all and is of concern.

  • Enough with inventing non existent issues with regards to the subject of this thread, that's more lame than IF what Rick posted was fiction. There's only one thing going on here; being informed of the possibility that one person is cheating, in a sport not even directly related to what we do. No person other than someone closely involved with freediving really cares about it. And fortunately no competitive freediver at this point represents spearfishing in the public eye.

If you do want to reach beyond the scope of what was implied so as to make it our concern, I'd rather go in the direction of; said person is looking to benefit from his cheating by gaining fame and recognition, amounting to idolization and blind trust of his fans, then taking advantage of this blind trust to sell sub par and even dangerous equipment. And that is a fact and I am standing behind what I say.

  • Dan I am not sure if your comment was directed at me? I agree with your comment so I hope it wasn't. I am not trying to make up any issues, I was only stating that issues that effect the reputation of spearos is all that concerns me, not comp freediving allegations...I should have been more clear.

My love of this sport is so deep that I do take it very personally when anyone does something that might effect MY rights to enjoy this amazing activity in the amazing oceans. I am not one to be insulting or flippant, but I will call someone out for putting my hobby at risk..I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS WHAT HAS HAPPENED HERE...just to be clear.

  • I'm sure a lot of you guys missed this because Rick edited his post. See post #11. Thanks Rick, that was interesting and it makes sense.

Very welcome Dan! Its always nice to be instrumental in a reality check and downgrading fake "icons" from time to time! A "DEEP-ception" like this warranted analysis, at the very minimum!

Me too, but I wonder why the knee jerk reaction. :confused1: There are no imaginary, theoretical or half baked agendas from where I'm coming from. This is old shit and there opinions like rear ends. Let me put it to you this way- my g/f was reading over my shoulder and said, "Is this shit STILL going on?!" Thus my alluding to public perception. Where's the idea going over the smilie face emoticon? :)

OK, maybe I'll post my original statement like this, make nice-nice... "Hey, Rick unless you're going to put up some real hard evidence and be explicit, keep it between the two of you and outta here. This putting something up on a website does nobody any good." Regards.

  • Zing! ouch :D

    :laughing3:

My love for this sport is so deep that I don't consider it a sport ;)

What I have to say has zero to do with competitive freediving... I have never had a interest in competitive
spearfishing personalty so maybe some can call that a sport. I am just a subsistence ocean swimming hunter
that sometimes likes to bring the best tasting (for me) and biggest pelagic fish back to my cave and chick.....
no sport in what I do, Taking the life of a beautiful fast moving game fish is a hunt and a kill... followed by a prayer of thanks to Mother Ocean for her gracious gift.

Competition can bring out the best and worst from people. My walls are full of records and awards of the killing of game fish at a time my ego helped motivate my hunts almost as much as my quest for fresh meat and fish for the winter. In my early years I would always gut them and lay them on ice as I drove to a store or landing with a certified scale to document the catch along with a Neptune witness . Many times my friend would say; you just gave up two Lbs gutting that fish and I would tell him that the fresh and clean quality of the meat was first on my list. Later came a very skilled deep diver named Ron up through the ranks. Now I found my self cutting short a morning dive after I speared a big fish, captaining my boat to Avalon and the certified weigh-master on the pier, giving the fish a wash in the sea and a extra gram of water for the scale. Long gone was the hunter that gutted fish before hitting the cooler or the scale. Yes competition and ego can change you if you let it. But I dive for pleasure now and not a piece of bronze and wood, for me it's a better place.
    Cheers, Don

  • Jarey, the only one bringing up Pipin in this thread is you. The way I see it Rick presented a hypothetical plausible scenario, nothing more. It's up to the reader to come away with a conclusion.

While I was the first one to actually come out and say he's talking about pipin everybody here already knew who Rick was referring to. I still think what Rick is doing is underhanded and wrong. If he has a problem with pipin why not bring it up with him. Don't try to ruin his reputation by posting a speculative scenario that involves him cheating without providing any hard evidence.

  • Yeah and I know Guy Skinner with JBL and wasn't thrilled when you offered to paste a pic of a JBL to the walker, but I didn't get my panties all in a bunch. I figure what your boy and the mystery cheater oughta do is hit the PM key and hash it out just like you can do with me anytime.

  • I'll hash it out with you right here and now. Your name is not Eric as you claimed in your introduction post, you are Sven from speargearshop, not that it means anything to me as I don't know you. If you're going to attempt this kind of deception at least have the foresight to register with an email that doesn't include your name and the shop URL, maybe you really don't care I don't know. Be that as it may I found it personally disagreeable that you did this, made me wonder about your agenda, but I was willing to let it go if you were to participate in a positive manner. I'm sure you won't mind taking your business elsewhere.

  • Wow is right Don. But not for the brass, for your perspective. I am in awe. I think you hit the nail right on the head. Reminds me of Tono's pic from the "inshore report" w the hunting party all holding the fish
