I don't understand why they think sharks are the only animal that its OK to feed. you'll never see any other nature show where they feed wild animals so why should it be OK to feed sharks?

I bought an expensive pair of Akona Kevlar gloves about two years ago and the first time I dove with them they saved my hand from getting cut off when i got it caught in the prop of my boat. I've been wearing them since and they're still in good condition. I highly recommend them even though their pricey at 40$.

My first build was slightly less than 1.25" tall, with horizontal hickory lams. It bent a little under 2 5/8" bands, and the effect on accuracy was noticeable. That gun is now retired, unfortunately, but it was a good learning experience. With vertical lams and different wood your results could be better, though.

Besides bending, also consider the potential recoil of a 7mm shaft, and the need for enough gun mass to counter it.

Good luck, and post pictures of the gun build, as well as the fish you wind up getting with it!

you defiantly want to use vertical lams the difference in the amount of pressure that it takes to bend a horizontal piece of wood and a vertical piece is enormous.

you can make a float line out of parachute cord, I've seen people use it as a core for pvc float lines. I know its not what you wanted butbut at least you can use the chute cord for something spearfishing related

ive never really used slings, but always wondered why guys don't use ra shafts for them.

If you mean RA gun shafts I don't use them because the flopper is too long and set too far back and i"m worried that it wont penetrate far enough when shot from a sling. I use RA shafts made for slings. just thought I'd clarify in case you misunderstood.

my favorite pole spear that I've used is the Henly, IMO it has the best sliptip that I've ever seen. I also use a sling that I made out of a round piece of wood, I don't have a pic but it's really nothing special. I think the sling shaft is more important I use RA 6.6mm 170 cm coated shafts. I'm planing on making two 12 and 14' polespears with henly sliptips for bluewater and large grouper but haven't had a chance yet.

IMO all the slings on the market fail to incorporate an ergonomic grip area, I've been wanting to make my own easy to grip version of a sling for years. Stay away from pistol grip slings. [/url]

I took some grip tape that skateboarders use and wrapped it around my sling, it works great with my Kevlar gloves i found out the hard that it wasn't waterproof when i was practicing in my pool and the tape slipped off and he block hit me in the face I glued it on with epoxy and safety wired it and it's been through about a half dozen Bahamas trips fine. X2 on avoiding pistol grip slings it seems like it should give you a more powerful grip but it doesn't. I've never tried Dan's shooting line idea but it looks like it should work fine.

Why do you think using a sling is not suitable for a beginner? I found that picking up a sling for the first time I immediately could take better quality fish than with a pole spear.

I had a similar experience when I first started using a sling and now I hardly ever use a polespear. However I do feel like slinging is much more challenging because your essentially freeshafting with a spear with the same diameter as a speargun shaft instead of having a much bigger spear that gives the spearo much more leverage to fight the fish and is easier to hold on to. You also need to be much more accurate with a sling as the fish can swim away with your shaft if you have poor shot placement. I also noticed that I needed to stay down longer than usual trying to get wounded fish under control which tests the spearo's freediving skills more. Don't get me wrong I don't think it would be impossible for a beginner to learn to spearfish with a sling just more difficult.

if you've never spearfished before I'd steer clear of the Hawaiian sling altogether and get a pole spear or a speargun. However if your set on using a sling I like rob allen shafts. They come in metric sizes, 6.6 or 7mm. I personally use the 170 cm 6.6mm shafts and have yet to bend them even after I've seen some decent sized grouper drag then under rocks. Also its not really possible to put a sliptip on a sling shaft. Also please be careful and find someone experienced to dive with spearfishing is a dangerous sport and I've seen some of my friends get hurt because they got in over their heads.

emery cloth works heaps better for polishing ss than sandpaper.

Some of that bathroom polish for sinks andcopper taps and a scourer work really well aswell.

I prefer 16" of over hang+, dont know how you can hit anything with that

The gun is only 33'' so I think its safe to say that it wont be taking very many longshots

I should have thought of that. My train of thought was that if you drop a scuba tank to the bottom the pressure doesn't change because the volume remains constant but if you fill a plastic bag with air and drag it to the bottom the volume decreases which would cause the pressure to rise. I thought that this might somehow relate to the goggles being made of wood which makes them inflexible while a normal mask has a rubber seal which can bend under pressure and decrease the volume of the mask. Also it's the application of Avogadro's law that that makes adding more air to the inside of the mask work, Boyle's law only deals with pressure and volume not with the actual amount of air in the mask.

My guess would be that because the goggles are made of wood the internal volume wont change as the pressure increases. This matters because Boyle's law states that P1V1=P2V2 what this means is that if the volume of the container of air remains constant the pressure will remain constant also. With a normal mask with a rubber seal the increase in water pressure causes the internal volume of the mask to decrease resulting in an increase in pressure. This is just my thought based on what I've learned about chemistry and physics in college. Maybe someone more intelligent then me (Tin man) can confirm/deny this.

No, Right after I posted this I was invited on an impromptu Bahamas trip so I didn't have time. I ended up just buying 2 coated 6.6mm RA shafts and love them. I took the two fish in my avatar with them and they're still straight so I have no reason to make any more. I might try this over the summer when I'm home from school though.
