Hey guys, just getting into the whole spearfishing scene and was just thinking, would it be possible to use parachute cord as your shooting line? Or is it too thick?
Probably a stupid question, but was just curious.

That would depend on the diameter of the cord. Aside from this, the issue would be the cord absorbing water and becoming heavy, causing drag.
I don't like to use anything more tham 2mm in diameter for a shooting line. I prefer to use a prestretched urathane coated spectra like Q-line.
200-400lb mono works quite well and is probably the most used material for shooting line.
I use 400lb mono, don't see the need for anything else. Mono is stiff and doesn't settle in loops causing tangles.
For what it's worth, I tried shute cord as shooting line on my first gun, a little 32" Sea Hornet. I found that it tangled badly, especially in NorCal kelp.

interesting, thanks for the replies! i figured i have a bunch of it laying around since i use it for accessory cord when im climbing. Guess i'll just fork out the money for a mono line
Momoi mono is the best I've used http://freedivingspearfishingg…/56-momoi-400lb-mono.html
Dynaglide is good tuff. I prefer knots over crimps. I have used the parachute cord in homemade floatlines.
awesome thanks guys
you can make a float line out of parachute cord, I've seen people use it as a core for pvc float lines. I know its not what you wanted butbut at least you can use the chute cord for something spearfishing related
