LaPaz advice needed...

  • interesting! who makes it, is it for american mechs and is it coated or ss?
    some pics would be appreciated

Wong and Mako have the American mech'd shafts in 7.5mm
Riffe and Mako have the Euro shafts in 7.5mm

Maybe some others too I would suspect?

  • I definitely need to go against my instincts when shooting them and aim higher than what I feel is necessary.

That is exactly how I feel. I've been using the triangulation method as you described. Really wish it was more instinctive, but I will stick with it for a while and hopefully it will become natural with time.

I definitely feel that 4 bands is way too much power for a 7.5mm shaft, especially on a hybrid.

What about special occasions with an 8mm shaft?

  • It all has to do with the gun and how it is ballasted and balanced. It can be done. Griswold makes some exceptional hybrids, but they are far removed from most of what you see.

  • Those hybrids jump. I don't like them, and I spent exactly one dive to know I will not get used to that kind of gun. It was a Wong hybrid, and it looked pretty simple to me for all the hoopla. I'm only saying this so maybe you can save some time, and not think it's you not using the gun correctly.

I'd be really interested to see one of his hybrid builds to see how they differ.

  • Thanks- really can't wait! Glad to hear the setup is right. Is there any need for a <120cm gun? Really don't want to pack another.

How near are you to La Ventana?

30 min drive! I use a 60" and a 130" gun for all apllications, a 55" /120 would be a nice choice for reef and around the rocks. Your set up seems just right for me.

  • Hi Ben, the spot your going to has great yellowtail this time of year and they get very friendly if you just do shallow dives 20 to 30 feet deep. I would buy a few pairs of white cotton gloves. Wear one on the non gun hand and just open and close the hand and extend the fingers till they come over to take a closer look, big
AJ 's like this too. Keep the gun tucked into the body and only extend to make the shot, if curious the fish will get very close, don't be in a hurry and try to only shoot the one in front of the tip, not one that may be bigger.

Soon you will find with smooth drops and calm mind the big ones will swim right up, a white tee shirt also drives them nuts, but wear your wt belt over it for safety. I would dive the area with a float line and float to help save the gun. Some times you can be shooting huge AJ so close that the shooting line still has a wrap left on the gun. If the line hitches a band and the fish puts it in gear, the gun will just be a bubble trail of cavitation into the blue.

I only shoot 5/16s and up down there as the fish like to break and bend gear over the duration of the trip.

Thanks for diving a great cause, the kids deserve our help .

    Cheers, Don Paul

    Something like this?

  • Great ideas Don. I've never thought of using those techniques but am really interested in trying them out. We've got huge AJ's in VA/NC that are very friendly- no gloves required. Look forward to seeing these yellowtail I've heard many stories about...

Thanks! Pics of the trip will be posted up on the DFAC site and facebook page.

Cerralvo Island and the sunken ferry to the north are very un sharky so you can get away with the white tee shirt, in other places of the world it can get you buzzed and bumped FWIW.

On a high spot with current, game fish down there show up with or with out flashers. I don't like to take my eyes of the bait and the front and side to side scan to look at them. I bring the bling on the fins and gun so fish are more friendly and close for good head shots or spine brakes.
