Does this shaft exist?

  • I'm looking for a 170cm euro shaft, 7.5mm, with full-size shark fin tabs and tri-cut point. The closest I've found are the RA and Riffe shafts, but the RA is pinned and the Riffe shaft has a rock point. Does anybody know of a shaft with these specs?

Having the tri-cut point is not necessarily a must, but it's more of a "would like to have." If I can't find what I'm looking for, I'm just going to buy the Riffe shafts. Thanks.

  • If you work carefully you can put a tri-cut point on a pencil point shaft with a bench grinder. Don't let the metal get red hot, and keep dipping it in used oil to cool it down/cure it. But I don't know if Riffe has 7.5 diameter shafts.

Actually I can make you this shaft if you want but only in 7mm; 170cm, Euro notch, full size tabs, tri-cut point.

  • You can also check out vector marine he makes shafts to order. You can find him on ebay and his stuff is kinda expensive but its had good reviews and will be exactly what you want

  • 7.5 is a rare request, and for a shaft maker to produce them economically, they have to order a lot of the material all at once. You're talking about 4-5 digits worth of steel.

  • Dan - I have 7mm spears already, but I just wanted to try the 7.5 on an upcoming trip.

Thanks, guys. I actually missed that on the Mako site earlier because I didn't scroll down far enough :D

  • Wishihadgills - I'll check out Vector Marine. If it's a custom order, then as Ryddragyn mentioned, it probably won't make sense. I guess I was just hoping that a shaft with these specs already existed. If not, I'll just settle for what's widely available. Thanks.

  • I shoot 7.5 on all my guns. And I love it. A lot more force at impact an I rarely feel like the loss of speed hurts my shots. Plus I never bend shafts.

I like the speed of a thinner shaft but prefer knowing that I'll get good penetration

I think that you will find that once you have used the tri-cut point, you will be reluctant to go back to the pencil-point style shafts.

They penetrate much more efficiently and leave a much smaller hole.

I had tri-cut point shafts, but when I had them swapped for shark-fin tabbed shafts, what I was sent was the Riffe shafts with pencil points, which I haven't even tried yet. I'm glad you posted that. I'm definitely going to use the tri-cut. Thanks.

    Judah - that's what I was hoping/thinking. Thanks.

  • So I'm leaving for my trip tomorrow, and of course I was sent the wrong shafts. I ordered 170cm, but got 180. Is it worth trying to use them, or is that way too much overhang to even try it? I have 7mm shafts I can use, but was hoping to use the 7.5.

  • i have used 10 cm longer and shorter than the +40cm rule and never really had a noticable difference... I miss fish and get some good shots with any and every setup I've used..I am a good natural shooter at anything I've tried (bow, pistol, rifle, speargun, sling) but not great with anything :D

  • I would say dont use it. It will probably be ok but since it isnt what you ordered you wont be able to send it back if you use it. If you have other shafts to use then I would send it back and get the right one. It would really suck to find out you cant hit anything with it and then not be able to get your money back.

  • If pressed for time, you could cut the extra 10cm. In half hour you should be done with cutting, drilling, setting the flopper and sharpening.

That doesn't deal you your frustration, but depending where you got it from they might give you a credit towards a new purchase.

Another thought is that extra 10cm on a 179cm shaft means nothing - the extra diameter has an impact larger than the extra 10cm.

Last, on some of the euros I'm using 5/16 shafts (Beuchat does accept it), and I love them. This diameter is much easier to find in US. If 5/16 is too heavy try 9/32 (7.14mm). For me I would have so many other things to tune before considering an extra 0.35mm in the diameter of the shaft.

  • I brought both shafts with me. The place that I ordered them from acknowledged the mistake, and told me to go ahead and keep them, and they would send me the right ones.

Might as well try them. Trying to get out tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.
