The 7 pin power cord is soldered and heat shrink sealed, the 10 pin connector will be more difficult.

Once I have the wires cut and trimmed to the correct length I wash all the wires and socket pins in isotropic alcohol, than dry with caned air. I drill a hole in a piece of hard wood to support the pin for solder tinning, I than tin the wires ends. Solder will melt and flow to the heat source so touch the tip to the far end of the solder pin cup, this way you will wick molten solder deep into the pin filling the cup to the surface of the hole.
Take you time and thoroughly inspect each joint for good flow and melting, trip away any stray wire strands before fitting heat shrink insulation.
Project Thumper just came to a screaming halt as I have been ordered to bring down the Xmas storage bins from the attic.:rolleyes1: I have put it off for a week but now my time has run out. and I like the fine meals the GF cooks.Cheers, Don

The Bad.
This boat project has been fun, but there are the days that are not, and I question myself about buying and fixing (when necessary) used electronics like the radar and ex Navy Ross VHF.
The JRC radar was purchased with no power cord or plugs so I was unable to test it. I had 30 days to take it back for a credit for other gear. Well I'm way past that, but I have excuses.... took a long time to source the OEM plugs for less than 50bucks each. Than when they arrived, I realized I checked the wrong box at check-out and bought male instead of females.:rolleyes1:
Than I procrastinated another week but reminded myself daily...I need to reorder those plugs.More Bad.
Found one of the plugs for 12 bucks but the other had a minimum purchase of 45 units.:@
So....I ordered a bulkhead plug to steal bits from and clone a part that I could use.
Fabricated a new power cord and scanner cord with new plugs but broke a female pin on assembly.
More ordering and waiting.
Soldered and sealed the new pin last night and rushed to the garage for a test of the radar. The Ugly.
Scanner starts and spins but a dead display...no back light on buttons nada dead. :(:(Cont..

Oh no. Ouch!! How much money would you have "saved" if it worked ?
Sorry for the shittiness. I know that feeling. I once fabbed a custom fiberglass trunk for a friend to flush fit his amp and sub. I never tested the amp and whe we installed it. Dead. He decided to get a new amp and paid my supplies and a twelves for my time. I was like 17 at the time so beer was worth at least triple. I was so pissed

We've all done that, one of the first lessons in life....things don't always go as planed, even with good intentions. The next thing we should learn early on is how to say ''No'' when a project is a loser. The unit was $1200 to $1500 new. I'm only in this one $250 plus $30.00 parts and a DVD of Blue Water Hunter, plus 2.5 hr labor and a wee bit of stress that it won't work.
Cheers, Don
