Ideal gun size for the Cortez Banks

  • I am thinking about booking a trip on the Peace to the Cortez Banks for some diving and was wondering if a 110 would be large enough for game in this area. I just bought myself the Ulusub 130rh and dove with it once and really like it but have yet to put some scales on it. But it is approximately the size of a 110. I would be using a reel with a float line and speardiver float. What do you guys think? Thanks.

  • I have seen one guy shoot at a 90 to 100 pound WSB two times and not hit the fish with a powerful gun,
another time a buddy came up short with a 50'' gun a monster yellow.
I'm not trying to be a A-hole but I am a very good stalker of WSB and YT but I would not be using a 110 ever
out there. Yes you can get YT and WSB but if a nice tuna or world record shows up you may just have a story. That is one place to leave the Calico alone. I would be using the longest gun I could get, blue water does not get any bluer on some days and if Whitie or a monster Mako shows up, a long gun is nicer to have to poke them with.

  • Ok. Thats what I was afraid of. I upgraded my rife E-90 to the Ulusub 130rh but it sounds like I will need some major fire power out there. Maybe I will have to go on more of a local trip then. I'm really hoping to get a Yellow tail and maybe a WSB before school starts in August. Thanks for the heads up Don.

  • The Ulusub gun lengths are somewhat misleading because they are sized in centimeters and most people are conditioned to this meaning the band stretch or barrel length, not the overall length of the gun.

When I used to dive the islands quite a bit, everyone always had at least one gun that was 60-65" in overall length. With most of the guys I dove with, a 63" mid-handle gun with a 5/16"-3/8" shaft and 4 bands seemed to be the most popular configuration.

  • What percentage of the Cortes trips actual make it out to the bank? Your guns are good size for local wsb. Still plenty of fish around for local shore diving. Good luck.:toast:

Agreed. You'll get far more use out of a 110.

  • Yeah. I just need to find some new spots to dive. I've been out once every week and only managed a few sheephead. They where perfect for cevich but I'm hopng to get into some bigger fish. I'm looking at diving the lb wall perhaps this week and maybe eventually get out to the islands. I had to canel a trip to channel islands due to a stomach bug :( a week and a half ago. Will keep plugging away.

  • Yeah the ulusub measurement are way off. My 150 pro is no longer than my rob Allen 130

Great,as long as you know when you get it. I made the same choice you are facing. I went with the gun I did because a true tuna gun would almost never get used while this one is a perfect all around bw gun

    i like to spear fish

  • I bought the ulusub because I new it would be good for around here as a 110 but I was curious if it would be enough gun for the banks. Which I guess is not the case. I'm hoping to do some kind of wsb or yellowtail trip though I just need to rethink where.

Alex, what does it measure from the front of the mech to the back of the band slot?

  • thats small for a cortez gun , but i wouldnt let that stop you from going on the trip only 1 in 3 or 4 trips make it to the bank , you will more likely be at sci or sbi , i was there yesterday and the vis was only about 15' to 20' and your gun would work in those conditions . when i go on those trips i bring a 110cm , 55" mid ,63"mid , 68"mid , i use my 68" the most

  • Alex you can target YT and WSB with that gun as long as you get close to them . The YT at Cortez will some times come right up to you if your cool to them. I had a 48lbr swim head face to face on the surface one time.
Get a white cotton glove to wear on your secondary hand, if a wave turns them off, just wiggle your fingers. Wait till you see scales and eyes before you launch the shaft at center of mass, or spine. Back in the day tons of YT and WSB were taken by skilled speros with Jay's first production gun featuring a 40'' barrel and 1/4'' shaft thrown by 2- 9/16 bands and small double flopper head.(one fish- Tom Murray's Record was 65lb) .
I would plan to go and have fun, and like Phil said making it to the bank is a throw of the dice. Capt George will
not be risking your safety with big seas and wind.

    Cheers, Don
