I recently did a sf trip off the Costa Rica pacific Coast. We spotted at about 15 miles off the coast miles of lines drifting on the surface with baited hooks suspended every 50 feet… Fishermen come every night year long
Longline fishing is a non selective technic which tease and kill everything there. I was told that usually 60 to 70 % catch get discarded and 70 % of those discards get thrown back dead! So I checked while diving 20 hooks: 10 empty, 2 turtles,2 dorado and 4 ray…
The bait used is made of discarded manta ray, sailfish..:(
Probably over 3000 hooks there!:confused1:
I guess longliner do killing also sportfishing...
Longliner...

Thank you for making us aware of this Virgili.

Be careful approaching someone's set like that. Right or wrong, people can get real nasty over someone messing with their rigs. This ain't Kansas....

Hank is absolutely right. In Cuba at least such traspass could turn out deadly. I don't support the practice and I'm glad you saved those turtles but just like Hank I advised you to be VERY careful.

X3
Cut the turtles free in the water. Never pull someones gear in your boat. Could get ugly fast.I was told by captains in Northern Pacific C.R. that this was a real problem. Thanks for Sharing Virgili.
