Sharpening pencil tip to tri-cut

  • I can't seem to find that bitch, but it looks like this, made from the metal of your choice. I use a old school slide ring brazed to the plate ( same size as shaft) fitted with a set screw. If you clamp a flat metal plate to your bench grinder you just lay the grind jig on it's flats and grind off the side of the wheel, it can also work with a belt or disk wheel.
Align the faces with the flats of the triangle, and just take off a little material at a time as to not heat the metal too much and anneal ( soften) heat treated metal. You can make your grind jig square for 4 faced grinds.
I learned this trick from the legendary skin diver Big Jim Christenson.

  • Thanks Don, that's exactly what I was trying to figure out; what stops the shaft from turning inside the triangle/jig. I think I may be able to make a simpler and more secure jig utilizing the flopper hole and a pin.

  • I like the pin hole idea, most of my floppers shaft I point grind. i also mini tri cut my pencil point sliptip heads.
They cut through bone better this way.

    Cheers, Don

  • Hollow ground is not simply tri-cut, it's more complicated and more sensitive to hitting rocks. It's a nice jig but I'm not sure how many shafts that little grinding wheel will sharpen before it gets too small and needs changing.
