• What I like is one can see the guys are being selective and not trigger happy on any hoo that swims.
When I have been aboard really fishy trips offshore I tell my guys ''Let your conscience be your guide''....
    and local and state regs.

    Cheers, Don

This place is unusuall even for the Northern Gulf. Heard stories of it for the last 6 years or so, always thought it was bullcrap.

We chartered a guy to take us out there, He and his mate both are accomplished freedive spearfishermen.
This spot is over 100 miles offshore. Just a Change in the bottom structure in an otherwise flat area.

The boat captain said that it is only that way with the wahoo for February and early March. After that, they cant be found there. Very tiny pressure on these fish due to the remote location and short period that they are available. He still said that our trip was better than average. The weather is very unpredictable here in late winter, so most trips are cancelled. We were just lucky.

The Wahoo were there for that weekend, everywhere you looked.
    So were the sharks...

  • Got another picture sent to me today.

This was the total catch for 4 divers, 2 days offshore

Did you have a good laugh at the guys with the huge wings on their guns while you swung your koah through the water? I would have had a good laugh...:D

They had 3/8" shafts too. Definitely looked cumbersome, but i will have to admit that Ced landed more fish than me.

That had more to do with his speed in subduing the fish before they were taken by sharks though.

I believe that given the same band thickness, number, and rubber strech distance, the 5/16" shaft has more kinetic energy than the 3/8" due to it traveling faster. Couldnt prove that though without an underwater chronograph.

I love the Koah, thanks for suggesting it. handles good, shoots where you point it. Took little getting used to.
Like the Mori slip tip also. shoots straight, and you cant say that for most slip tips.

  • The 3/8 become really useful when shooting tuna, tuna go through a lot of 5/16 shafts [emoji6] . I would not recommend big shafts for wahoo due to the softness of their flesh, you are not worried about penetrative power with wahoo or it making spaghetti of your shaft. BUT in shark infested waters MAYBE something to be said of a large shaft stunning the fish or doing more damage to allow quick recovery.
Experience matters huge in wahoo, having the experience to know where to shoot and when you can horse the ho verses letting it run. You will be a boss next trip, not that you weren't shooting 5!

I only ever use 3/8s and sliptips on the Baja hoo, with 600#s of rubber pull as Big ass Blue and Black marlin stalk the area i dive.

''BUT in shark infested waters MAYBE something to be said of a large shaft stunning the fish or doing more damage to allow quick recovery.''

Yes I believe this is true, They attract less sharks when you brake their back and don't get to head down to the grey dogs. I have never had to dive deep for hoo in the South Pacific or Baja, so if you realy hurt them you can take command over your trophy with out letting them become shark bait. The only one I had the tail chomped on was a fifty foot deep fish I shot on a pinnacle that was hanging with a bull shark.
The bull was on the same spot the next day but got too cocky, the meat went to a near fish camp in trade for the jaws.

    Me too Don.

Thats why we drove 8 hours in my jeep, and went 125 miles out in the gulf of mexico for this trip. I got to do all of these things while im still at it.

Oh, and you remember me saying "how can i go back to shooting amberjack and cuda after that trip"

Well, guess what im doing in the morning!

    1 foot seas or less.

The Amberjack and Cuda are in for it

  • Hahahhahahah when you get skunked a few times or every one of those bastards break your heart you will be happy for the relaxed hunting of old... believe that! But you got to get over that fever first, and the temperature gets high! [emoji1]

    Well George,

Went today and didnt see any Cuda or Amberjack. But, i did see some Sheephead and a Mangrove!

Didnt have any problem shooting them for a family fish fry today. Just got thru eating fried Mangrove with Gouda Cheese Grits.

After all, you cant fry Wahoo.

  • Wow! That's fantastic!
