Have fun drilling into that RA shaft. It ate one $12 carbide drill bit. The metal is very hard. If you have a drill press it would be better. Use a lot of oil.

I will gladly comment on this idea more fully later. But rest assured, that this is a completely unsubstantiated pseudo-scientific theory. Even the head scientist pushing ID (Intelligent Design), William Dembski, has said that the science hasn't caught up the proposed theories. It is at the stage where they are focused picking apart the flaws in the Neo-Darwinian concept of evolution. There are few ideas of their own to push their theory, and every single one of these has been refuted by solid science and a proper understanding of evolution.

The ID movement was created by the same people pushing "Creation Science", trying to substantiate that the world around us was created by a "supreme being". Specifically, so it can be taught in schools. There was a movie about this topic, from the ID point of view; "Expelled". They were doing their best to show that it is a science, but it recently took a hard blow.

"In Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District, a group of parents of high-school students challenged a public school district requirement for teachers to present intelligent design in biology classes as an alternative "explanation of the origin of life". U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III ruled that intelligent design is not science, that it "cannot uncouple itself from its creationist, and thus religious, antecedents", and that the school district's promotion of it therefore violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.[23]"

ID leaves more questions than answers and it presupposes a conclusion before the evidence is found. I have a strong opinion on this topic, but I don't want to write too much now.

If you're not planning to change the line mid-dive, just have extra pre-cut lengths ready to go on the boat. All you need to bring are an extra set of hand crimps to secure that last bit of mono around the shaft. I don't really like the snapswivel idea, that's gonna rattle and potentially come off when you shoot it. It is also less streamlined and might affect the shaft accuracy with it's hydrodynamic and mass effects.

Ron Burgundy: What? You pooped in the refrigerator? And you ate the whole... wheel of cheese? How'd you do that? Heck, I'm not even mad; that's amazing. How 'bout we get you in your p.j.'s and we hit the hay.

    HAHA:rofl:

I've been wanting to chime in on this, because I can share my experience.

I started Scuba diving when I was 15, but that was only to satisfy my curiosity. Diving was the end goal, not catching fish. When you start (scuba) diving its like this whole world is opened to you, something you've only seen on TV, so it feels almost magical being there with the fish. It varies from diver to diver, but mastery of buoyancy and getting comfortable happens relatively quickly and the novelty wears off. Diving for diving's sake got boring at about 10 dives. I took the next course level, and learned to go deeper and navigate. I also started creating a mental list of fish and creatures that I was looking for. From majestic animals like the Manta Ray or Dolphin to the lowly nudibranch. I'd check them off as I saw them and searching for others was kinda fun. Exploring wrecks are cool too.

Frankly, this got boring after a while. So what are the options:

    a) Take the next course - Rescue Diver/Nitrox/Cave Diving, etc...
    b) Stop diving
    c) Underwater Photography
    d) Spear those fishies!

I actually chose "b) Stop diving" for 10 years or so. I'd do it sporadically, but not enough to warrant buying my own gear.

A buddy of mine who grew up hunting moved to Miami and decided that he wanted to try spearfishing when someone mentioned it to him. Sounds good. What type of spearguns do all shitty dive shops have? JBL's or Billers, possibly Riffe. If you're just giving this sport a try, you're gonna go with JBL or Biller, unless you have money to burn. So you dive with the JBL or Biller and find out that they work fine, just get close enough to the fish. Hogfish are so easy that you could use a sharp stick, I won't even bring up Grunts :rolleyes1:. So shitty guns do just fine for those purposes.

They have distinct advantages to the scuba diver, mainly hip loading. Chest loading sucks with all the gear you have on. Euro guns will probably never take hold in that community for that reason.

That's actually how I got into spearfishing, my buddy invited me and I used one of his JBL's that he bought. I had also bought a fiberglass polespear with a paralyzer tip. That didn't last long.

Long story short, I liked it enough to do some research and get online. I ended up buying an O.ME.R. Cayman and never looked back, that was 4 years ago. I really got into freediving "seriously" in January or so of this year. I bought some freediving fins in July off eBay because freediving with scuba fins blew.

Nice catch JimC - what time is dinner?!
Nice story by the way - so descriptive - brings a tear to my eye.
Uhhh - what's that about a dirty thumb shot?! :confused1: is that like a dirty Sanchez?!:)

Haha, thumb shot is when you can't extend the gun to aim on the fish because it's in a hole or too close. You hold the gun below you and back so the thumb pulls the tigger. Dirty because I couldn't aim at all, had to guess where the spear would go!:thumbsup2:

Tin Man, if you're ever down here I'll dive with you Scuba and or freediving. 70˚ (Alt K for me!) was terribly cold! :) It never occurred to me when I was scuba diving a lot to hold my breath on the way down to dive bomb the groupers, but I can't think of a good reason why not to. Breatholding while on scuba is a no-no, but that should only apply going upwards, not down. One weekend I must have seen half a dozen groupers out in the open, but all at 110 feet, out of my freediving depth range.

I didn't see the shark, but it wasn't a nurse shark or a hammerhead. I said that it was probably a bull, but Patrick said no and mentioned a square head. No mention of tiger stripes though or black fins. He said he's seen one before and his buddy identified it as the Caribbean shark.

I've only seen 1 bull shark, that was in the Gulf, a Hammerhead, and about 1.3 trillion nurse sharks. Never seen a caribbean shark, either.

I did see a huge dolphin swim right under me while diving. That was great and a first.

I was supposed to eat that enchilado, but I was stuck eating at P.F. Chang's :boohoo:.

Ok, so we have a few stories about the day. Davie, I, and our friend Patrick went out last Friday. Dan had to bail out because his "foot was hurting" and had the "sniffles":weeping:

We started on the (red and white) sea buoy out of Port Everglades. Visibility was top to bottom at least 80 feet. Current was pretty strong north of the channel, so we planned on drifting on the buoy. As we drift closer, there was a pretty nice fish show, but all small except for three big wahoo at a bout 10 feet. Davie points them out while I am underwater and I swim hard to close the distance. Davie is swimming on the surface. He takes a shot, but the fish are so big and the water so clear that he completely misjudges the distance. I see a shaft drifting slowly downward as I swim up. We chase them for a while, but we don't get another chance.

We decide to drift dive 3rd reef but the fish weren't home at first. I eventually get a decent hog, and while I was on the boat Patrick yells out "how deep are we?". Davie yells back "50". Patrick yells back triumphantly "I got a fish at 50 feet!". In the middle of the celebration, a Carribean Reef shark comes out of nowhere and takes the nice hog right off the end of the spear! :shark2: All that was left was a scale and a slightly scared dude.

After this, we decide to go to Dania second reef, off the pier. I dive down and see this Doggie hiding amidst a rock pile. I had to do a dirty thumb shot to get the angle. Shaft penetrated through the left fillet and out the gut, but held tight. That fish immediately tries to hole up, but I immediately grabbed the shooting line so he wouldn't get deep, I was able to pull him out before surfacing.

We check out another spot on the reef and the fish were definitely around. Lots of small muttons around but I think there are bigger fish around. While swimming, a 50 foot yacht drives right by me, within 300 feet of the boat :angry1:. After I'm done cursing, I dive down and sit on the bottom in about 35 ft, just waiting on the bottom and I see the big hog. I swim straight for him and put down a stone shot. :cool2: I bring him to the boat and show it off to Davie. He tells me that he also shot a Red Grouper that I missed earlier and a Black, too!

I decide to try and get some aquarium fish for a friend when I see a pile of bugs under this ledge. I come up only to see Davie with a snare already in hand. That guy is the lobster whisperer. I decide to hang out while he grabs the bugs to see if a mutton or a grouper would swing by. Four short grouper come around, Nassau, Black, Red, and a Gag. Pretty cool to see all them, but no big ones.

We decide hit one more lobster spot to end the day (Davie gets one more to make a total of five). It turned out to be really great day of no pressure, fish filled diving. There was only one thing left to do: :toast2:

The threads are the weak point in this suit. I've had a couple and the threads go quickly. Body glove makes a nice top for spearfishing now. Quality seems higher, and comes with Body Glove's wetsuit making experience. Austin's has them.

Those are all great movies Jim and I've actually seen most of them, particularly the ones from Akira Kurosawa. I remember my father always used to say that he was an exceptional director. I also loved all the spagetthi westerns, particularly The G, The B and The U. Its theme is actually the ring tone on my cell phone.

My favorite western is The Wild Bunch. I haven't seen the Magnificent Seven, but will now. Thanks!

The Wild Bunch is pretty good. I love the scene where they swim in the wine.

Ladrón que roba a ladrón - I saw this as a preview to 3:10 to Yuma. Looks really funny and good. You guys won't even have to read the subtitles like I will!

I like this sort of thing and own them:

Yojimbo (samurai movie Akira Kurosawa - brilliant)
A Fistful of Dollars (remake of Yojimbo, Clint Eastwood set as a western)
Last man Standing (remake of Yojimbo, Bruce Willis set in the 1920's)

Seven Samurai (samurai movie Akira Kurosawa - again brilliant)
Magnificent Seven (western movie, remake of Seven Samurai - very good, incredible cast)

Zatoichi: the blind swordsman (made in the 90's)
The blind swordsman Zatoichi (remake of the above, made in the 2000's) Here's a bloody but neat clip: Zatoichi

Akira Kurosawa made some excellent films - all in Japanese: Ran and Rashomon are notable films

Anime: Ghost in the Shell (The Matrix borrows heavily from this movie). One of the best movies I've seen.

Western: So many, but The Outlaw Josey Wales is so funny and good.

I picked these because I didn't think you would have seen many them. Maybe they will give you new ideas on other movies.

Being able to control your dreams is called lucid dreaming. I find that I can do that the majority of the time. My best spearfishing dream was when the blue water was above me. Imagine the air ten feet above you being replaced by a 80 foot layer of water that you could jump up and swim through. It was great.
