Takowill - sorry for giving you the runaround with the gun, that's before I talked to Davie. I'm gonna have to default to Davie's Aimrite because it's what I'd rather have and I know the guy well. Oh, the wreck was the Ultra Freeze.

    Dan,
I have to say that Kris didn't influence me to do this. While it was he and I on the dive, I was the one who made the mistakes. The plan was never to dive as deep as I did, but only to be over the wreck. The fishfinder was showing lots of fish high in the water column, and we did see Jacks there.
I'm opening myself to attack here, but my breath-hold is pretty good for someone who's only freedived for about 2 years. I have never been close to SWB before, that is mainly because I have never had anyone to dive with that could dive the depths that I was able. Up to this point I had no problems with bottom time and depths (to 70'). I took this as "just another dive" and didn't see the risks when I shouldn't have. I mistakenly went deeper than planned, but fortunately he was there to look out for me.

Did you end the day? Also, do any of you guys scuba? Do you take a tank with you for lost gear or holed up fish that cant be retrieved? It's a safer alternative.

Didn't end the day. I took a break for a while and we went shallower and I borrowed a gun. I ended up getting a nice mutton and a big Spadefish:rolleyes1:. I won't be shooting a spadefish again. Meat tastes fine, texture leaves something to be desired.

Freek --> Deep - 90+, which I wasn't ready for; my previous max depth was 72.

Marco --> I think I might end up with an Aimrite (Davie's), but Takowill on this forum offered to sell me one of his Rabi's . He should be able to chime in.

Dan --> Yeah, on a reel. I'm definitely gonna get a floatline. I already have a float. I still like having a reel, but I see how nice a good floatline/float combo can be. You always have a place to hang your stuff and you don't lose your gun. It will also be a savior if you get a big fish at depth. Also, I did lose my new weightbelt and 4 of the weights!

I was diving down on a grouper and didn't realize I was waaay too deep. I missed a long shot and dumped my belt. The gun didn't float to the surface, guessing the reel hung up just enough to hold it down. I should have paid more attention to depth, but I got messed up because there was shitty vis down to about 40 ft - then viz opened up to more than 100 feet. I didn't realize how far down he was on the wreck.

Expensive weekend, but I learned a lot. A Shit Load.

Seaweed forwarded this link to me about the FWC weekly reports:

    http://myfwc.com/law/Weekly/index.htm

I pulled out somethings that I thought were funny:

    BROWARD COUNTY

On September 15, Officers Bill Carpenter and Paul Mendez were dispatched to Conservation Area 2A to help search for a lost dog after it had broken free from its owner and swam across the canal. Several alligators had swum into the area and were eyeing the pet. Using a vessel, the officers eventually located the dog in the sawgrass.

On September 16, Officers Paul Mendez and Eric Alford assisted the United States Coast Guard and Fort Lauderdale Police Department with a drunken boater who nearly collided with a tug boat and then a seawall. After completion of field sobriety exercises, it was evident the subject was highly intoxicated. A breath test revealed a level of .228, almost three times the legal level.

    :drink1:

    MONROE COUNTY

Prior to the opening of lobster season, Officers Joshua Peters and David Dipre discovered a submerged pen filled with lobster in a Big Pine Key residential canal. They conducted surveillance and contacted FWC investigators who took over the case. Recently, the Investigators determined that several local residents had harvested lobster prior to the season opening and placed them in the pen at a rental property. They intended to sell the lobster once the season opened. Two subjects were cited for possession of seventy lobsters during closed season and thirty undersize lobsters.

"Busted! I didn't know FWC did surveillance"

Officer Erik Steinmetz arrested a local commercial fisherman in Card Sound for multiple criminal violations that may result in a suspension of his commercial saltwater fishing license. Violations included fishing with 34 untagged lobster traps, possession of 43 undersized lobsters, failure to
have a live bait well, possession of undersize mutton snapper and five boating safety infractions. The same subject had been cited one week earlier for other commercial fishing violations.

"And one undersize Mutton, that's the one that really stings."

Jellyfish---> Yeah everywere. I was finning along to get over the spot and was looking back at the boat to check my position. I look forward and I'm seeing the "clover"(middle of the jelly) in the middle of my mask. I swam square into the jellyfish. Stung my everywhere but where my mask and snorkel were.

I screamed like a little girl as I tore this thing off me. Fortunately, it subsized before anyone had a chance to piss all over my face!

I've tried to suck it in a couple times because I thought the escaping air was letting water in and making noise. I think this was only in about 40ft of water though. I don't think I got enough air to actually enter my lungs. It was also pretty uncomfortable, but I guess you could get used to that.

I'm interested to know, but I'm thinking it's not very useful.

Moving the weights on the belt was no problem, I just stretched the belt a little.

I was referring to the thickness, it was tight when initially getting the weights on. I had it tapered like the photo you attached before I cut the tip off. But the string way made it easy. I don't think you should widen the slot, I think that it wouldn't work as well for the thinner belts.

Oh, and I posted pics of my RA shaft on the other thread, but not on SB.

I'm not really sure, Mon, but I've noticed a fair number of Asians in Caribbean islands. It's kinda funny because of the accents. What makes sense to me is that there was an incredible spice trade in the 1500-1800's and that's how we got all this mingling of flavors. That's why the British love tea and so do Chinese.

Oh, I attached more pictures for Davie. I didn't originally post them because he didn't pay me my modeling fee. Also, I didn't want the post to be all about ME, more about the trip. That big mangrove snapper wasn't my fish, either.

Thanks Tin Man. They arrived yesterday, and I must admit that you pack the hell out of these!

I had a hell of a time getting them on the thick RA belt, even with conditioner and a pair of pliers. That's when I thought to myself; "Why don't you use your brain?"

This worked like a charm. Trimmed the sides a little and cut off the tip, passed some line through, lubed with conditioner, pulled right through. SUPER easy and definitely the way to go. I had no problems getting the knot through (cow hitch).

    Take a look.

    another:

Hmmm. I don't think that it's case hardened. When I welded the tab on Dan's shaft, the heat burned the coating and left a chalky yellowish residue. I have welded hardened gears before, and they left no such residue, presumably because case hardening infuses such a small amount of carbon, nitrogen, or whatever, that there isn't enough to burn and produce any noticeable residue. Case hardening also would provide no corrosion protection.

I didn't think it through - about the lack of corrosion protection from case hardening. Sn Man, take a look at the photo, you should see where the galvanization (in my mind) has worn off. This shaft is <2months old. The coating is slightly better midshaft, but just as bad at the other end, where the sear engages.

    Nice Hog Jim.

Good meeting you briefly. Glad to see you guys bagged some innocent sea creatures.

Innocent? He was coming right for me!

I've always thought that the fish always look smaller in pictures. After shooting it you're excited and happy. Then the pics come out and it just looks O-K.

Marco, I used Jamaican Jerk Seasoning, it's a paste made from a lot of different spices/herbs. It has a pretty strong flavor so it must be used sparingly.

Nice catch and nice hog. Were the pipes really big like 6' diameter? Cool dog. My pup already eats the fish heads complete, did you try it with him?

The pipes were that big. I swam through them a couple of times. Really fun. I filleted this fish and pulled the belly/throat meat to feed Hammond (the dog). I don't really let him loose on the fish because he'll leave a nasty mess.

Nice hog Jim. I like that "overlord". Those Jack Russel sure are smart beasts. We have a terrier mix as well similar to the JR and she is a "lil' bitch". Much different temperament than my larger breed. Don't asians also have Basmati rice?

The dog is pretty smart but thinks he's bigger than he is. He's not as hyper as other ones, all around good dog. I actually have a plethora of rice choices: Basmati (Indian, which is asian), Sushi, Brown, and even Uncle Ben's:0.

The new coating looks like galvanization. I've seen the old ones and that looked more like a hard coating, I think it's like case hardening.

The new one looks like galvanization. Very different altogether. It's the color of zinc and seems pretty soft. I just assumed that's what they were all like when I bought it.

Seaweed, I, and a friend Austin went out on our friend Kris' boat (ApneaSpearo on Youtube/Spearboard) last Sunday. Went out of Miami, visibility was kinda milky all day, but we managed to get enough fish.

After getting the anchor set after three tries, we got a chance to dive over some concrete pipes that held some pretty nice fish. Kris pretty quickly got a 5 lb Mangrove Snapper and I got a 3lb Hogfish. Throughout the day we were also able to get 5 bugs and bunch of Schoolmaster/Mangroves.

    Here's the cooler:

    Nice Mango and Hog:

For a little perspective -> that's a 14.5 lb Jack Russel Terrier, he's a son of a bitch (literally, hehe).

My girlfriend/fiancee/overlord rubbed in a little Jerk seasoning, breaded, and fried it. She also made this really nice mango chutney (Mango, Red onion, Cilantro, Red Bell Peppers, Lime Juice) and sliced up some avocado that went super delicious with it. I cooked up some chipotle black beans and some rice [Jasmine - I'm asian]. Lobster tail was saved for future consumption.
