this thread is awesome, thanks for starting it Dan, and thanks for joining up and contributing Ricky, your pics are amazing

this forum is forcing me to really work on my spanish cos I know I am missing some funny stuff

i understand all the reasons that other guns are better than the biller hornet line and we dont need to get into that.
I was asking only because you added the word freediving in front of gun and I thought there was more behind the comment about the characteristics of the guns.

I have shot a friends riffe and it was a great shooting experience, I have also shot a few cressiguns and liked them a lot.
I figure i'd like to learn what I like and dont like in a gun if possible before I drop serious change on one

I just like the biller floridian for now.

First advice, when possible change the seahornet to a good freediving gun.

what is wrong with a sea hornet for freediving?

I use a 54" biller and I have no issues with it at all, it floats and I can move it easily in the water...what else does one need from a freediving gun?

    that is pretty cool...
does the new google (info sucker) give the same results for everyone?
I thought it claimed to tailor your search hits to what it believe you are looking for...I dunno, all that info gleaning scares the piss outta me, what is to stop them from monitoring everything....but that is another thread i guess

I know in Hialeah there are mobile knife sharpening vans that go from restaurant to restaurant. They are Cuban knife sharpeners that continue to do the same trade here.

They'll pull up behind a restaurant and whistle then someone will bring out the knives and they will sharpen them right there.

They have a distinctive whistle which my dad says is the same used in Cuba.

    that is cool as hell

I use a cheapo sharpener with the opposing ceramic rods for my fillet knives and it works well enough it just takes some resharpening after every five or so fish. for other knives the stone is the way to go.

I have a buddy who bought a knife sharpeneing kit that had these rods that you set against a form so they were held at a particular angle, this allowed you to just run the balde over it and get the desired point. it was annoying to learn how to use but yeilded shaving sharp blades...I'll see if he still has it and has any more info to share

for clarification, the cart is got on ebay is way crappier than the one you posted in your first post..that one should do fine, but it is more of a chore to strap the yak down onto and then keep there, and it has to be taken back to the car cos it will take up all the room on your kayak

    my .02

i avoid the scupper hole models because that is where the seam of you yak is and thus it is likely the thinnest part of the plastic, further the seam is inherently the weakest part and I don't put anything hard into my scupper holes.

as for the smaller carts...I have an ebay yak donkey and it sucks..worthless. it is ok for paved sufaces, but that account for about .0002% of the area I am carrying my yak around and therefore it is worthless.

I would ask yaudon as he is the yak guru, and I am pretty sure the advice he'll give is that you get one with the baloon tires. it is more expensive, but you can move sooo easily across sand that it is all worth it in the end.

I also put in a recommendation for just lugging it and then dragging it through the sand. It sucks, but it is do-able and the price is right

look forward to seeing you out yak spearing with us

    hau-

my back up is a 5 ft fiberglass pole, it needs a new rubber at the moment. I have a para tip for it as well.

I use a 6ft spear and have often thought about using the 5 ft on the reefs where we dive because it would be easier to carry with me in addition to my gun.

I would be happy to lend you either for your trial time, but I would only give away the 5 ft one.

I'll bring them both the next time we dive so you can decide what you want to do then :)

the two tips I have a re different in that one is spring steel and quite rusted, but strong as all hell and the other is ss and not at all rusted, but the tines can be bent and might not do too well against repeated rock slams.

I will be happy to give you the ss one along with the spear- the way i see it, it is impossible to have too much good karma among dive buddies :)
