thought i would share with you guys that 2.5 weeks ago my my life took an ugly, unexpected turn. i was weight training, bench pressing, and on my fourth set doing 225lbs (a weight i normally handle fine for a few reps), i caused a major tear to my pect muscle and tendon, right where it attaches to the shoulder, the pain was severe, worthy of passing out but i was able to fight thru it. went to the ER but they couldnt do much for me at that point.

2 days later i made it to an ortho surgeon and 2 days after that i went under the knife for urgent surgery, it is the only way to fix this traumatic injury. repair went well, but boy, what a tough surgery, i have a 4 inch incision on my left shoulder. dr said i will make 100% recovery and success rate that it wont tear again is 95% if I get back to normal activities. I have gained about 30% of my arm/shoulder movement back, start therapy in 2 weeks, should have full motion in 3 weeks or so, dr said I can dive then. as far as doing things that require significant strength (ie loading a speargun) probably 3-4 months, however psychologically speaking, it might take me longer.

I love diving too much and can't wait to get back into the water, but I'm thinking I could be shooting a video cam for a while :D, or have someone load the speargun for me :laughing3:

Any suggestions for a decent cam and housing? nothing to crazy...

needless to say this has been life changing, the last 2 weeks especially, and I have to reconsider my fitness routines from here on out, I will probably stick to lots of water training and much less gym, my bench pressing days (at least of any significant weight) are prob over.

    RIP

I'd be very curious to understand the effects of diving in very warm water like this would have on the dive reflex, in all aspects, it almost seems like diving in a hot tub. to me, it would seem that diving in anything over mid 80s degrees for performance would probably counter productive, but i am just speculating.

for 6.5 min dives in 65 feet, he had to have been doing 5min plus holds on the bottom, a 5min static is a task on by itself!

when i went to the caymans last year and did a lot of diving by myself, in warm 86 degree waters with no wetsuit, i remembered the reflex would take a little longer than usual to kick in. i would 1:30-2:30 dives in the 60-90 range, taking between 5 (minimum regardless of depth) and 8 minutes intervals. makes me wonder if that is even safe enough, I mean, can i be guaranteed i wont SWB if I think I'm being safe enough?

I love this drill because it comes so close to simulating an actual dive.

swim 75 or 90 feet (depending on which side of the pool I'm in)
    hold for 2 minutes
    swim back
    total time 3 minutes

Can't wait to see how it translates for me in the ocean. Of course there's no clearing needed in the pool, but you have to kick the whole way.

nice work, i have been out of training due to work for a while and now i'm injured, so it will probably be some time before i can start again. when i was training consistently, it translated into 2-2:30 ocean dives up to the 65-75' range, about 1:45-1:50 in the 80-90', definitely can't hit those now.

    nice, boat looks good.

water was cold today in Boynton too, 70 degrees but the vis was outstanding, easy 75'. Saw a big gag and the biggest red grouper I've seen.

I think I might need a 5mm top for next year.

Nice catch! I like Elios suits too. Which neoprene is it? Heiwa? Daiwabo? Sheiko?

heiwa, open cell inside smooth benthos outside. I never tried a custom suit before, it is like wearing a silk shirt, you can't tell it's there, very comfortable and stretchy. also very warm with just high waist pants.

don't think I'll be buying a suit that isn't custom made again.

went out with a few good friends on capt Wolf's boat for a few hours. Hey, this is my third diving trip this year, things are looking up! :D

got a few muttons (6) between 18"-24", they were skiddish requiring long waits to show themselves and in one or two occasions, a nice chase.

    vis was 25', dove 50'-75'

also wore my new Elios 3mm smooth camo top, kept me warm while the other guys were chilly in their 3mm long john wetsuits :thumbsup2:

Yeah I wanted to get a bucket to catch the first one but it was too much trouble. Harry wouldn't spear them because they were not a challenge. I told him to me anything bigger than average is a prize.

forget about that, it's a fine meal!

harry is too funny, maybe on the next trip you should hide one of his fins so he has to dive all day with one, present him with a little challenge :D

    davie,
those are excellent eating! they are so stupid you don't even have to get in the water, you can just free gaff them.

sorry to hear about the conditions, I kept looking last night for a masscre report...:(

    jeff,
when I've done mine in RA and rabitech barrels, the plug usually goes in very tight, so I just put some silicone ahead of it in the barrell and in the back of it to make sure it's 100% sealed and just push it in to the desired position.
