What was the viz like? I went there about 2 weeks ago and couldnt see more than 5 feet

Bout 5 - 8 feet on the bottom rough estimate. Could just make out the bottom from the surface. Ive been timing going out there with the first push of the incoming. I got some video today, going to stick it on youtube and put it here in a few mins.

dove again in the bay today. viz wasnt as good as yesterday with the later incoming tide... but we found 2, actually 3 wrecks in shallow (12 -13 ft)

one is a boat that looks like it wrecked pretty bad, partially intact. saw the following on it -

    lots of tropicals
    lobster
    sheepshead
    gag grouper
    small blacks
    mutton snapper
    mangrove
    schoolmaster
plenty of lionfish, polespeared a few.
    lots of tropicals

the other wrecks were two cars, one right side up the other upside down. loaded with lobster.... cant wait to see what they look like on mini season, we should be able to pull plenty off of them.

Went for a quick aquarium collection dive in the bay behind me and nates place today. Viz was actually fantastic, clean ocean water has pushed into the bay inside haulover. Found some really cool stuff. two ledges, drifted over the grass flats and saw lots of life. Im going to be going back out there tomorrow, with the camera this time. nice to put the guns down for just seeing stuff.

Milky blue water... thats gotta be a heartbreak. we got canned in key west yesterday too, viz went to crap. drive back today the ocean and gulf were crystal clear and flat...

Damn, over here in South Florida (Fort Lauderdale especially) there is so much fishing pressure that it seems barren out there at times.

Andrew, I'd be down to film and take pics if you decide to do it.

Sounds good to me dude. once i get some financial obligations out of the way Im going to get everything together. gotta wait for warmer water too so i dont freeze my nuts off literally :D

Minimal gear spearfishing is very cool. It's pretty much the way I started, speedos, no weight belt, 2 liter soda bottle for a buoy etc. But I did have a pneumatic speargun.

Keep in mind 30 - 40 years ago there wasn't as much competition/pressure as there is today. If you head out like this in Miami you're likely to come back empty handed, and possibly frustrated having seen one nice fish all day that you could've taken with a speargun. All other gear is negotiable, as we've all forgotten one thing or another in the past and had to make do with other than our preferred gear. In the Bahamas you can go without a speargun and do well, except having to deal with sharks..

I took that into consideration. I almost feel like just doing it once for the experience would be worth it in the end. who knows... might sling me a huge hog :thumbsup2:

Waiting on Dane's gopro footageto be edited. He shot all the muttons, I wont take credit for fish i didnt kill thats for sure. They were all deep except for one I saw when i didnt have a gun in my hand. all over 10 lbs... crazy looking in the water.

I recently became curious about the idea of spearfishing the way guys did it in the 50's and 60s here in the US. I want to try it the way it was done then, like the pinders for example.

my plan is to pick up some old duckfoot fins, classic j snorkel, oldschool round mask, UDT swim trunks and jump in with my hawaiian sling and one of my old dive knives i have hanging on my wall. I think it would be pretty cool to try it at least, would make for some pretty cool pictures as well. Anyone interested in giving this a shot with me this summer?

Was a rough day. Lost a 10 lb hog on a tearoff, whiffed a shot on a 40 lb cubera and a massive cuda... was rusty getting back in the water bigtime.
