Hahahhahahah, this thread had a sudden change of fortune , very nice. Only in Speardiver forum.

Come my way, Don and Dan , I´m waiting for ya!

Oscar, that sounds like a plan. If you´re interested We can arrange a better trip than Cortez. Let me know. Un abrazo

Matador de Pez grande - I am committed to James Curtis at Cortez Club for THIS trip but nothing for end of November. I am at La Concha hotel (I think) this trip - hope we can meet for dinner one night and discuss November. Did Tropical Storm Manuel affect La Paz?????

I think your topic is spot on....Dan likes dogs...so I think now that he sees the ''seadogs'' He and I will have to go visit Monsterslayer next year, time permitting to test new gear. Business trip for him with write offs of course .;)

    Cheers. Don

Can I come next year too? I'll be the bag boy.

I bet the kids would love the Seal preserve at Isla Espiritu Santo.

    Cheers, Don

    Beautiful photo and enticing!

We just had a Sunday morning pow wow. Only way I could get the wife to agree to La Paz was to give her (and twins) what she/they have been asking me for the past year plus - Europe. Italy primarily, might fly into Amsterdam and take Euro train to Italy or fly directly into Italy - depends on airfares and my elite status partner (Delta/KLM/Air France).

So - looks like La Paz for Spring break (November 24-30) and Italy for Christmas break. I better find more part time work fast (sequestration halted all of my part time teaching jobs for the FAA.

Monster Slayer hope our kids (your two and my twins - boy & girl age 13) can swim with the Whale sharks and seals together end of November :thumbsup2: Hopefully we can get together some evening after my dive with Cortez Club - we can discuss it over dinner maybe since I'm headed to La Paz to spearfish (solo) end of this month..

Off topic and only partly diving - sorry Dan.

Me parece muy bien. I'm a retired old fart but with 13 year old twins all of my planning needs to be around school schedule andwife's work but boy o boy this sounds great. I'm sure there are many clean adequate hotels or piensones near resturants in safe quiet areas and I've heard pangas are easy to find and rent - do you have any kids around 12-15 that would want to snorkel with my twins? I'll PM you to continue to not tie up Dan's forum.

    Gracias

From November until late february or March! Here´s a pic of my Sister Paula Paddle boarding with a Whale shark in shallow water on a very nice spot.

Great shot. Sounds like Christmas break (December 22-Jan 3) would be a good time? Or perhaps Thanksgiving break (mid-late November) might be better? What could we expect for water temperature in late November or late December? Kids would probably need some kind of wetsuit to get in the water with them.

    Gracias!

Monster slayer - off subject: my twins (age 13) want to swim with Whale Sharks - what is the season in La Paz and when is the best/peak time? Gracias muy amable.

It is so upsetting that political issues WE, the USA, helped to create, is the reason we cannot share in a beautiful island and why a country sits in poverty when it should be a wealthy sovereign.

    Shameful

Amen! Few U.S. citizens know how much we meddle and seem to preoccupied with domestic issues to raise their collective voices in protest. Shameful AND sad.

God I so want to go one day with 4 of every thing and leave it it all with a spero clan.
Thanks for the great story and pictures:toast::toast:.

    Cheers, Don

I could be talked into a trip like that. Take lots of gear, fins, masks, snorkels, a few spearguns, add some soccer balls and stuff for the young girls and go freedive for a few days and come home empty handed but feeling great! :thumbsup2:

PS: my Spanish will help too.

Thanks Dan. Firstly - the original painting of the Shark Attack is in the Smithsonian in Washignton D.C. Have viewed it numerous times. Secondly, I have spered a few large Tarpon in Pananama for the locals - they are extremely boney with so many fine bones tht trying to eat s a loss of energy from removing bones versus getting meat in your mouth. I do know the locals in Panama ate them - but I do not know how.

Latly, without getting into politics - I used to fly a lot to south America out of MIA when I lived in South Florida as an aviation safety inspector for the FAA and crossed over Cuba many many times while in the cockpit jump set. The southern coast of Cuba alwAys looked so inviting with crystal blue water - and no boats in sight. God it must be full of fish that hadn't seen a diver in years and years if ever.

I have Always wanted to go both diving and underwater photography in the waters of south Cuba - just imagine still virgin. Thanks for the photos Dan - reminds me of Panama and I ddn't take photos either. Difference s, yes I know, I can return easily and you can't can not. Hopefully things will change eventually.

    Good thread thanks.

Oh, not confirmed by me, but I have heard that ray wing cut into circular plugs has been sold and tastes like scallops. Just relaying not MY experience.

My apologies - started on first page thinking this was a new thread - blame it on dinner and dinner wine. 2008 and still going - great but my pistis irrelevant. Desculpeme

Hey everyone Im originally from Southern California, but I am now living in Costa Rica. I have been spearing here with my 2 friends over the last couple of years. We have amazing fishing down here and so far all our catches have been off shore dives. There is a lot of rock reef in the northern part of Costa Rica perfect for all kinds of fish, lobster, and octopus. Im currently using a 90cm dual band Mako railgun. Its a great gun and has landed me some nice fish. We are slowly working our way to deeper depths and longer dives. Im pretty new to the sport but have been a surfer my whole life so my passion for the ocean runs deep. I joined the forum to exchange ideas and info with other divers. And also to tell people how awesome diving in Costa Rica is! Thanks Trever

Welcome Trever - I think you will like this forum. Fun group with some solid experience and always will Ing to help. I spent most of my life diving just south of you in Panama and know very well your waters, reefs, and fish.

I can absolutely tell you that you will need a bigger gun! Costa Rica, like Panama, has some nice reef fish - Broomtail grouper, black grouper, Jewfish (Goliath Grouper), Mutton Snapper, Red Snapper and Big Dog Tooth Snappers. Outside Big Dorados, Tuna, Wahoo, and Billfish (I don't advocate spearing billfish), Kigfish and Sierra to name a few.
Then the most sought after fish in Central America - the elusive and beautiful Corbina (small relative to the California Sea Bass).

That's just for the Pacific side - the Atlantic has similar but different mix of fish. I assume you are on the Pacific side?

Like others have said - attach photos of fish, beaches, coastline and some pictures of the beautiful Ticas in bikinis is always welcomed here - Dan the owner, manager, moderator is always helpful and check out his store for great stuff and better service . Bienvenido!

:laughing3::laughing3: too funny. I even tried to hide them with the black marker.:the shoes were from my pirates of the Caribbean costume.

    Cheers, Don

Don - I am still laughing, and trying to conceptionalze the fairy shoes with the implied zipper - a real dichotomy. :laughing3:

You know the story pretty much as it happened. No, it wasn't me. I was still in the water when the fish box was left open.
Got a few small fish near Chinaman's Hat. I missed a LOT. I was using a mid handle with 5/8 strong bands. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
His sister put in 38 stitches. Went to his house that night and it was all sewed up.
He wanted to go the next Sunday and was going to just drive the boat. But I had family plans.
It's always fun diving with Daryl. It's a lot different then diving here and the fish are pretty educated there. Lot of good spearos in Hawaii. But he knows a LOT of good spots.

I've never been to Hawaii but have heard that the fish are wary and scarce. They also shoot a lot of fish that I grew up never spearing - considered unedible and too small. Sounds like a fun outing.

Curious about spearfishing in the Phillipines. I took all my spearfishing gear when we moved to Singapore thinking I would get a lot of opportunities - ha ha never happened but the Phillipines being huge with so many islands was always a place I wanted to dive.

You didn't have good luck with the weather but any feedback on spearing there?

    Thanks!

So Hank - you were the one that opened the fish hold in Daryl's boat deck and he turned around not knowing you had and stepped in catching the sharp edge and cutting his foot along the toes nearly to the bone. His sister, a dermatologist sewed Daryl up - he said his seamstress sister sewed him. He went diving yesterday said it was ok. Did you guys get any fish? How was it? Reef or blue water or both? May someday take Daryl up for a dive if I'm in the area - would love to hear how that went.

I have a '' convenience'' zipper 10''s long on my left thigh, if you piss in your wet suit and smell like skank
you'll never get invited to side tie to a yacht for dinner and drinks:toast:......don't pee in your suit and smell like skank. :D:D

    Cheers, Don

Don - are those elves shoes in the first photo? Sure looks like it. I need to think some more on your little left thigh zipper before I can make a pissass comment

I'm trying to imagine wearing wetsuit with a pissete on a SHORE dive when I had to walk across/through a crowed beach/parking lot. Depending on the "size" of the pissete - might get some phone numbers (or laughter) on the way to the water :laughing3:

    Great idea Don.

Curious - with your large extensive enviable collection of spearguns, collectible and current, are the Euro style guns shown in your Thule mount what you currently use in So Cal?

Seems like your back is better - good news.
