Can anyone PM marginatus for me? I keep trying to but it says I don't have permission to send private messages? I am just trying to get into contact with him so I can start learning how to spearfish! Thanks!!

Contact Dan through hs shop email contact and he can set you up for pm's or just exchange email info.

Good luck and please post back on what the diving is like in the Azores. Fala Portuguese?

Marco, no worries. It's through experience that we learn I suppose, and thanks for the advice. I would ditch my gun before that time came, but I'm sure others have been less fortunate while thinking the same.

No worries on "sounding like an ass" (you don't), I know your comments are only helpful.

Swim guy - not sure if you can find one in Belize but a simpe nylon ski rope worked great for me before reels or float lines existed. In the old days we used Clorox bottles but any empty gallon size plastic bottle will work.

You are fortunate to get to dive with Hank and Jake in their paradise and probably get a few big tiger shrimp to throw on the barby as a side Benny.

Do you live and work in Belize now? Where were you previously? Just curious and envious . <img src= " height="23" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x">

Nice. I've been scuba diving in Indo a few times. Amazing waters. Ripping currents.

I remember sitting on the west side of Bali waiting for a ferry to take us to Java. You could see volcano peaks in the distance. The ferry coming in was almost sideways making headway in the current.
And basically, if you looked to the right (north) it was the Pacific Ocean and to the left, the Indian. Unreal place. There is power there. 8)

That's my memory of diving Bali as well. Amazing clear water, great reefs, great exotic interesting fish - and really strong ass ripping currents. Lovely gals too

Hi Nick - I'll jump in to try and help since your post was directed at spearo's that live in the Azores and aparently no one here does. I have a couple of suggestions that might be helpful.

1). I did a dive in the Cape Verde Islands, several in fact, and it was very different from what I expected. My guess is the Azores is somewhat similar even being out in the Atlantic further and more north. The Azores has some big Blue Fin Tuna but way out of your league as a beginner. Most of the spearo's I read about in the Azores are Blue Water spearo's.

    2) Go to some dive shops, boat marinas, etc., and ask around to see if any shallow water/reef divers might take you diving with them. Start slow and dive the shallow rocky reefs fr smaller reef fish.

    3) get some inexpensive long plastic fins or even scuba type fins for shore diving. Get a good fitting mask simple J snorke (don't fall for the type that keeps water out with a stopper on top). A simple pole spear (forget speargun fr now) and get comfortable shore diving the shallow water. Oh, even though the Gulf Stream passes close to you - you will need a wetsuit - get an inexpensive 3mm wetsuit. Even a surfer wetsuit to start and of course a weight belt.

4). Many say take a course, dive with a buddy (good idea) but many of us (me too) started just like I stated. By ourselves exploring the shallows and slowly get comfortable to see if this really is what you want to do.

Good luck and come back to tell us what the waters are like, what type of shallow fish are found, etc. I've only heard about the giant Blue Fin Tuna spearing and would be great to hear what the shallow waters are like.

Most of all - be safe & have fun!!

I am eagerly awaiting the results, not for the results per say but to see who will handle being wrong with grace ;) <img src= " class="smiley" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x" height="23" width="23" loading="eager" data-tooltip="biggrin" aria-label="biggrin">
So many entrenched in their beliefs, but someone will have to bow :) Hummm wonder what will happen if Dan is proven wrong??? :frustrated2:X( OR :yay::ecstatic:yaydance::hooray::nana:

    This - will be fun & interesting <img src= " class="smiley" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x" height="23" width="23" loading="eager" data-tooltip="biggrin" aria-label="biggrin">

Doc and DuQuesnay eat trunk fish here. They have an exoskeleton and nice, boneless meat inside. I never shoot them. They look so .....cute. haha. .

Hank - This brings back some great memories - I was living on a sailboat in the Virgin Islands and across the street from where our boat was moored a local lady grilled trunk fish and gave you a reefer while you waited for the trunk fish to cook, at least that is what I was told. Damn, they were soooooooooo good.

I'll throw my 02 cents in - should be a fun thread.

Growing up in Panama we only speared and ate: Corvina, snappers (all), snook, grouper, small jewfish, Black Snappers (Triple Tail), Wahoo, Dorado, Sierra ad King Mackeral, and that's pretty much it. We never ate jacks, bonitos, parrot fish, barracuda, tarpon, and the zillion other fisheye had in abundance. We had some huge Dark Blue Wrasse or Parrot Fish but never ever considered spearing much less eating them. I have speared and landed a couple of really big Tarpon (100 + pounds) but always gave them to the locals to eat.

With a few spearing trips to Sea of Cortez I've speared and eaten Trigger fish and Parrot fish but honestly - probably not going to do it again. Parrot fish taste mellow, tender flacky white meat but to me Parrot Fish is still an ornamental fish. Trigger fish in ceviche didn't impress me.

Even today - Maybe too old to change but wouldn't spear. Barracuda to eat. Now my wife who is Japanese tels me to spear her a Jack r Bonito both highly prized in Japan but not my taste.

Great thread - thanks Makoa - should be fun.

Virgili - interesting, not sure I would get a pack of sharks in a frenzy before joining them but to each their own. These Black Tip sharks look quite different from Black Tip Reef Sharks that I've encountered. Different species?

Awesome video. There are some really cool and very friendly fish but I think I have to disagree with you on the best video ever. My favorite is this one from Perrin James.

My vote is for the video George posted over this Hanibal film for various reasons. This was too narrow whereas the East African video had it all, great coral, a huge variety of fish, nice Doggies, some interesting exotic fish, it really was an awesome video. At least for my taste - your mileage may vary.

    Everyone still loves ya, so don't worry about being retard... <img src= " class="smiley" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x" height="23" width="23" loading="eager" data-tooltip="biggrin" aria-label="biggrin">

    Nice video BTW.

Just envious of his life style. :)

I saw this when you posted on fb Gerge. Amazing video! Do you know where in East Africa it was filmed? Tanzania Zanzibar or Mozambique most likely. I was in Tanzania and Zanzibar and died looking at the water with no diving gear on hand (work trip).

Oscar--I'm too old now to dive at their level.
1 Leagues guy is Navy an 1 is civ
If in 1980 I knew GuAm was like this, I would have sold EVERYTHING an moved here. <img src= " height="23" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x">

So Sir - yo can't be nearly that old - how old are you Sir? Much smaller number than mine for sure.

Still waiting for pictures of Bikini or your massage girls Sir. <img src= " height="23" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x">

When I first moved to Guam, Leagues Deep invited me into their circle. They happily taught me many things about how to hunt in these waters. They invited me to go spearin with them MANY times. They are good people and some of the most proficient freedive spearos I have ever met. :toast2:

Sir: Are they military or civilians Hau? I was offered a job on Guam around early or maybe mid 80's to work at the FAA Radar/tracon site but had just accepted a promotion and turned them down. Life/fate takes us on some interesting roads at times. Have wondered from time to time if thst wasn't a major mistake not to go.

I went and looked at a few other videos - pretty impressive diving environment and some very good divers. Seems the use some well used RIFFE Euro's. I expect you dive just as well - did you enter the tournament Hau?

Still waiting for the Bikini photos you promsed a long time ago - Sir!

I'm gonna start this thread a little early in the hopes that these spearos log on later and write the complete report with pictures.
Leagues Deep of Guam (ck Youtube for their vids) has entered and SMASHED the competition yesterday (28Feb2015) here on Guam. This was a shore dive, freedive, swim out, 1man up/1 man down competition. Just remember that here on Guam we can easily shore dive/swim, out to depths over 200-400fsw and this team CAN do the deepest and longest spearing freedives that I have ever seen.
I am very proud just to know these spearos and want to congratulate them on their win. :hooray::toast2:

    Sir: Pictures? Types of Fish?

Remember that I'm pretty much using feminine bands so I don't need that extra grunt at the end to hook the shark fin.

If I'm not too lazy to reach all the way out, I can hip load my 55 Wongs with my girl bands. <img src= " height="23" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x">

Just wait until you get to your 70's - damn hard to maintain muscle mass. I might need to change ALL of my long 14 mm bands to 12 then 10 mm and don't want to hear anything about the big muscle in the skull haha

Just make sure to grab the bands with an overhand grip. I think that is the most common mistake people make when trying to load a rear handled speargun. :toast:

This actually raises an interesting question. Wonder which grip the majority of you all use - and why. I have mostly been a hip loader most of my like employing the pals up grip. Even when I try the chest loading methodology, I still utilize the palms up grip and have been curious for some time on what grip others use - and why. Perhaps this should have its own thread!

This is one of the MOST interesting threads I've read. I'm able to follow most of the calculations but it takes me to a saying that I use often when I teach International Aviation courses, it is:

    Confucius

    I hear and I forget
    I see and I remember
    I do and I understand

So all extremely interesting and before "I forget" what I heard, and Based on what I "remember" from the equations - a Roller guns advantage is same power and range of a longer non roller speargun but to really "understand" - will wait for Makoa's demonstration. ?(
