All great advice Don, I am glad to see you back active on here.
I had not considered that a gun that's heavy underwater might not be such a hinderance if I used it with a float line.
I shot fish deep with it a couple times and from depth it really feels like it's an extra load to bring back up.
Would plugs covered in epoxy alone work, do you think, as far as sealing them if the entire gun isn't then epoxied over?
I'd like to avoid changing reels so I suppose I'll try everything shy of changing that and doing the plugs as a last resort.
    I appreciate the advice.

I hope not, but I can see the making of a song out of this…."he could gut a fish…..drive the boat while opening a beer can…..they called him Dan…..the one hand man….."….. A Legend is born…..

You better copywriter it. I know you've been messing around with the Fender too

Since posting up about this gun I have only used it about 4 times before shelving it because it has a huge flaw, it sinks with the shaft out. I am not familiar with the properties of wood and ballasting but I would like to make the gun usable instead of relinquishing it to the closet. The blank itself was heavy. When I hold my Abellan (which has a larger stock) in one hand and this gun in the other, the latter is noticeably heavier. The only solution I could come up with is to drill several approx 1" holes into the stock (i guess as the bottom), fill them with some type of foam, cover with wood putty and then epoxy the gun once I have ballasted it correctly. I didn't want to epoxy the gun as I like the look of oil much better but I imagine I cannot leave wood putty exposed.
I should add I am not too worried about risk of the gun bending due to drilling into the laminates because for one the wood is apparently dense as hell and I doubt I'll ever use more than two bands on it.

So basically I am looking for advice or ideas because I am not too keen on on the subject but would like this gun to have a future.

Welcome and beautiful ling. I bet you will be happy with your suit, I love my 3 Speardiver suits.
Look forward to dive reports and pics from your area.

Took a look with a magnifying glass and didn't see anything. Any spines would've been rubbed off. I had an itch attack and rubbed my hand wildly. This made it much worse. It feels like it's on the way to looking like the pic Hank posted. Did the hot water thing again and couldn't keep it in the water because of the pain, but when I took it out of the hot water there was some relief. It's weird typing like this, my finger tips are double the normal size. I can't make a fist I feel like my hand will explode if I do. I'm surprised the effect is peaking a day after.

I thought I should've grabbed the hydrocortisone rather than the Benadryl cream.. I don't think it will make a difference at this point though. Thanks.

Makes me wonder how presumptuous it is to believe ourselves to be at home in the ocean, yet the smallest thing like this can take you out. I wonder if touching this crap would affect a dolphin or a seal the same way. Then again there are plenty of nasty things on land that can have a similar effect..

Damn Dan, sorry you're having such a rough go with whatever got you. It is surprising with all the time spent in the water you haven't encountered whatever it is you touched before. Have you found any other possibilities of what you may have touched while looking on the Internet?

Id bet anything it was a stinging hydroid. They used to get me from time to time. They are like clear little feathers that can grow on any surface, even on top of other things like sponges and seafans (or just rocks or sand).

Do we have any Destin/Pensacola area members that would like to kayak a few miles out this or next weekend?
    I have two kayaks
