Could just poke the big fish with the muzzle of your gun and probably get the same result without a spike. I think that's what most divers do down here anyways. I haven't seen many spikes on locals guns, though I have one on one of my pipe guns.

I use palms down out of habit from properly chest loading since I started spearfishing. I think you're using different muscles depending upon which method you use. I'm pretty sure palms down is more efficient in regards to chest loading though, try both and see especially when you load to that last notch/tab close to your chest.

I haven't mastered the chest loading yet but getting better at it. Cant wait to see/use my new gun the Phantom the anticipation is kinda killing me.

Check out YouTube they have videos that show you how to do it. It's more technique than muscle (90/10). I have a scar right below my sternum from chest loading in the summer time with only a rash guard on. Thank goodness for adrenaline and the fish that took my mind of of it at that moment lol.

George, I totally agree. Chase, build your own Hybrid. I built mine patterned after Daryl's GR Hybrid rear handle plus 55". I tried to buy one of Daryl's guns that he built for a guy that backed out of the deal...he sells those for around $650. Not bad. I think I spent about $250 and a couple of Airline passes for my build. But it is a great gun. I built it after diving with a South Point assassin who shoots a 50" Wong RH plus hybrid. I loved how it tracked in the Hawaiian currents but still had the mass to handle bigger shafts and three bands of 16mm.

Don't get me wrong dude, I think they're beautiful guns. But I just don't see the need for one here. I can land mid water fish like jacks and macks with a 110-120 pipe gun with 2 x 14mm bands. I don't think our currents rip nearly as hard as you Hawaiian dudes endure. Plus those hybrids still get broken muzzles sometimes, whereas on an all wood stock that is a lot less likely to happen for sure.

Any who, I'm pretty confident that my my 125cm SD Teak w/ 2 x 16mm bands can handle anything I will run into on all 3 three of our reefs and wrecks from 15 - 80+ fsw and even some blue water such as mahi and those stupid wahoos George mentioned that come in closer, and kingies as well.

    :thumbsup2:

Also, I would love to see Cameron Kirckconnell come here and land as many reef & pelagics as he does with a pole spear. I have much respect for that man as an athlete, however, most of his sponsored videos advertising that new CF Riff pole spear are in spots with not a lot of pressure. Can't pole spear those muttons and blacks that hang 15ft out on the edge of viz...

Maybe not, a Michael Jordan is a Michael Jordan [emoji6] also think about the fish guys shoot in the Bahamas with polespears... but give those same guys a good gun in the same spots and see what happens! Right?

C'mon dude, the fish in bimini come up and blow you kisses just begging you to stick 'em with your lion fish pole spear.. you know, the really short one. If bahamas had pressure like SoFlo, those guys wouldnt be landing nearly as many fish because it'd be fished out and a lot more competitive. Thats why all of the joe's from here with $$$ take their boats over their a few times a month to catch fish. Cudo's to them, maybe one day I can get back over there. But to be able to land fish on a regular basis in somewhere like South Florida where anyone can swim from shore and hit some reef and the commercial/drift boat guys are killing it. And did I mention the thousands or recreational divers? More skill is involved IMO, because you have to know how to hunt here. Places like the bahamas you just go swimming and the fish greet you.

    Ok, I'm bracing myself for impact......standby :laughing3:

    George,

I'd say to each his own. You can Google search AJ Halley, but he's a pretty well known Spearo, personally known by Daryl Wong & Sherri Daye. Any who, he shoots those Wong hybrids exclusively and kills it on the reef and in the blue. Got to meet him at the blue wild expo, seemed like a down to earth dude.

I personally don't like that style gun and don't see the need to spend $800+ for a base model Wong when I can get a custom teak for much less expensive.

Before I get jumped, I'm not bashing those who use hybrids. It's just not for me. I'd rather have a straight pipe gun or an all teak gun, not to be intermingled.. but one of my buddies has a custom $1300 Wong hybrid 60" with 3 x 14mm bands and claims its heavy as hell to swim with all day compared to his riffe euro. I chuckled inside when he told me that after he told me what he spent! :cool2:

    Just my .02 :toast:

Well said makoa. Different strokes for different folks. I still think 3 x 14mm would be much more pleasant to shoot on your DIY Hybrid while still offering plenty of range and power for a double wrap of line.

    :toast:

Marco says hip loading is for panzies and chest loading is for men. :laughing3: Dont you have a chest loading pad on your wetsuit? :rolleyes1:

NO ONE has yet to realize a HUGELY important band rigging method possible for roller guns. I cannot believe that NO ONE else has figured out this simple and easy method. I got this idea and tried it out on my RA roller conversion and could EASILY pull over 400%. In the end I had to lengthen my roller bands cause my hand kept getting bruised from the recoil.

Isn't the point of the roller to eliminate most of the recoil, if not all?
