My friend and I are taking our girlfriends to Islamorada for the weekend. I'm bringing my boat and I plan on just running around outside the 3mile line looking for good patches and hard bottom. Is this the best way to find fish in the area or is a local map and public numbers going to produce? We'll be spearing and lobstering and hopefully be able to teach the women. Any advise is appreciated, thanks in advance.

damn that's a better price than I paid at my LDS. I seem to recall woodguy using that type anchor in a detailed build he did on here. Maybe there's a good pic in that thread

Yeah i'm slowly building a gun, it will be a 3-4 band gun with an 8mm shaft and sliptip. I always bring my gun on trolling trips for exactly the reason you mentioned but only ever find singles with the gun on board :S

I don't know if anyone on the site was in key largo in the mid to late 70's but my dad/grandpa found a 500lb aerial bomb sitting on a patch reef in about 10' of water.... they got to call the Navy out and watch them "dispose" of it. My dad said it was awesome.

I hope to never find any mines or aerial bombs that never detonated anywhere near where I'm diving.

I wonder if they were able to pick up any dolphin or wahoo around it?:S

I sat with Dan when he built my fins and it is an awesome practice that he has perfected, but it is still highly time consuming. I think I recall it taking upwards of an hour, including trying on different footpockets and then Dan actually assembling them. I've had mine for about 15 months and dive wreck/reef/bluewater and I personally would not bother experimenting with other carbon fins from this point on. My Pursuit fins were money very well spent, and if/when I wear them out I'll have Dan build me another set.

I read about this the other day, super cool story. What boggles my mind is how it never sank, 3.5 yrs of rain and swell.. a lot of time.

if you look at the picture it loos like it floated upside down. still crazy it didn't break apart more, ttop got mangled and part of the top cap is missing but hull and outboards are still intact.

yeah I'd be pretty pissed,, especially if you were shorediving,, what a hastle that would be.. and if you had one of those fancy expensive riffe float lines,.. sinking the boat would be the only logical retribution.

OR, boat becomes the property of the affected diver. Either one works for me.

Sounds like a rough time, I know how those days go :frustrated2:. Was your friend diving with equalization issues or was the blood and pain out of nowhere?

I went out yesterday south of Hollywood and tagged along with some people hookahing for bugs in 25-35ft mostly to test out my new Aeris F10. Despite the wind and waves being pretty favorable we couldn't seem to find viz past 30 feet.

The hookah divers got 8 bugs and I took a large grey trigger. Passed on a couple of nice sized hogs (got hog in the freezer) and saw tons of small mangroves and macs. Also got to see and follow around some neat sea creatures, a few large rays, a cuttlefish, a huge porcupine puffer, and an octopus.

friend was scuba diving said he was having some trouble equalizing but nothing terrible just a little slow, then he said he had it pop and bubbles came out of his ear, and he got light headed nad felt dizzy. he came up as quick as he safely could.

well I went out this morning with LB and some friends. seas were 2-3 easily and fairly steep due to the wind. we had top to bottom viz in 45 though. had some difficulties in just about every aspect of the day and decided to come in after my friend came up dizzy with small amounts of blood coming out of his ear. no fish or bugs

Are you new to freediving or just spearfishing? Biggest thing I can say is practice and do it safely. Don't dive alone and if you get the chance try to dive with experienced guys, you can learn a lot just watching them. As far as gear goes, learn with what you have and upgrade as skill/money allow. When beach diving a boogie board or kayak is very useful/helpful. Dan did a great writeup on a cheap boogie board setup you can probably search and find. It works great and is cheap, I use one myself when beach diving. Learn the FWC rules/regs/seasons and always display a diver down flag(the bigger the better) when in the water. A lot can be learned from reading posts here on the forum. Lots of guys live in the tricounty area so try to meet new diving partners.

Don I believe the wood is Heart Pine, but I'm not 100% sure.

I never aim my gun at anybody so by practicing smart technique I avoid needing a safety. Like Dan said safeties save fish.

Dan this wood looks awesome when coated, I first noticed it when coating the lams. I need to make the other side and see if anymore material needs to come off I think it will be pretty good where it's at but I didn't want to make it too thin.

Today was my day off, I have a cold, but it's nice weather to be outdoors soooooo:

I took a block of wood I sawed off my blank, split it down the center and made some progress on the one side. So far I've sanded as far as 320 grit, but most of the rough work was done with a dremel.
