I fillet them first to smoke them and then flake/pull it apart for the dip.

I use this for Macs, kingfish etc. First I brine the fish fillets overnight.
Brine:
1qt water
1/2 cup coarse salt
1/2 cup brown sugarMix well and make enough to cover fish fillets in a tupperware dish.
Place in refrigerator for 8-12 hours.
Remove from brine and rinse with cold water. Smoke fish fillets - I typically smoke fish with hickory around 200 degrees (time depends on thickness)
Dip:
1-1 1/2 cups(c) smoked fish
1c cream cheese
1/2c sour cream
1/2c mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon(t) onion powder
1/2t garlic powder
1/2t ground red pepperI shred the fish with my hands/fork in a large mixing bowl. Add the wet ingredients and then all the dry ingredients. Mix well and serve on your favorite cracker with hot sauce and cold beer.

kabob skewer or garden spike with a couple rubber bands attached to the end. use 2 fingers on one hand to wrap the bands around and draw it back like a slingshot. saw some guys in mexico do this and they filled a 5 gallon bucket in 2-3 hours. cheap simple and works well.

anybody ever smoked MFE??

Awesome video, and better skills. I wish I could sit behind a rock at that depth and debate whether I wanted to shoot the grouper or alpha hogfish.

I noticed the hog before the grouper and when he turned away I had to rewind it to see what I missed. That's when Don's over/under gun is handy.

I bought a cheap little arc welder. It's hard to lay a bead, the rod keeps sticking. Then the rod finally get red hot and starts sort of dripping, and I can get a bead going, but in the end the bead is kind of crispy and doesn't stick to the shaft. Any suggestions before I return this machine? Maybe I'm using the wrong rod?
Another thing I don't get is how to use the goggles. If I put them on I can't see shit, I can't start the weld in the right place.
If it sticking your holding the rod against the material too long basically welding the rod to the material. The rod shouldn't drip it should be close enough to the puddle to flow into it and you should weave the rod back and forth to build the puddle(make sure you move slow enough and have the amperage set right to achieve good penetration). After stick welding you have to hammer away the slag (protective layer over the bead) then that will reveal the weld. Some rods are easier/harder some cleaner/messier. Also make sure your using the proper rod for the material. With the goggles the basic cheap ones suck you can try that pin the tail on the donkey welding or I would recommend an auto-darkening helmet, it makes life mush easier. Lastly make sure your wear the proper clothing which covers all skin... yes hot molten metal hurts when it splatters but the sunburn it will give you sucks just as bad and sneaks up on you.

I only know a little bit about a little bit so here it goes. My dad just bought a lincoln mig welder and it does a great job at what it does its not as precise but is much easier. TIG is amazing IF it's done properly, I however can't do anything other than curse at the machine. Dan, rather than getting a new cheap machine I would scour craigslist for a quality used machine. I got a Miller stick welder for free from there, we got our lincoln mig unit for less than half price and it was still in the original unopened box. We also sold a miller mig/stick/tig/generator on there. Good deals can be found but like welding just takes patience.

Awesome report glad the day turned around for you! How are the MFE's to eat because they look absolutely hideous, any pictures of one prepared?

ever do multi boat trips? i think it would be fun to get a couple boats with 3-4 people each to do trips like this. lots of different people to learn from plus it can get a little competitive between boats.

let me know when youll be down south i regularly beach and boat dive.
-
id like to make that one someday too. did you guys troll there, or shoot over only stopping when you found promising areas?

FWIW, on a typical day trip I am covering 230-250mi and burning 120-140g in a 27 contender. I like to run day trips as it is an easier sell with the wife and lack of fish after 1 day of shooting has not been a problem.
Jason is dead on with the info on the blacks. They can be tough out in the open, better if they hole up. We see a fair amount of big cuberas, but those sob's are the master at cruising into the current, just out of range. I don't even bother with them when I see them
is that distance so great because you are traveling from stuart across or because you guys move around alot. I think its only 50ish miles for me from hillsboro inlet I have a 20 foot boat with a 2 stroke 150 and 70 gallon tank. I would really hate to need to fuel up over there because I hear its expensive but it beats running out midway back.

How much fuel you guys burn?
And do you guys stay in hotel or camp on the boat?
I think I would want to go there just to kill a 60lb+ black
btw thanks for the info.
x2 i have a small (20ft) boat and my cousin has a 23' we want to load up and go over but don't know anything about expenses, fuel burn, places to stay/hunt, etc. I heard that you have to register or something like that over there which is the expensive part. Any truth to this?
were the YFT on spear as well?

Sorry to hear we're losing one from the sport, but glad your OK with your decision and continuing to do other things you love. Like the other guys said if you're ever in south Florida, I'm always looking for people to dive/drink/BS with. How far are you from OK city? I have a short(2-3 month) stay out there coming up within(hopefully) the next year.

very cool look, how did you apply it to yield such a smooth shiny look? Was there any wet sanding and buffing involved?

I had a friend that would snorkel with me while I hunted any time I shot a fish he would yell and scream in his snorkel, made me laugh although I couldn't be around it for very long. What kind of fish is that?

nice grover!

beautiful gun, very cool design. Is the circle sticking out on the right side a sight?
