I doesn't look like it would handle any amount of seas well just because its small and the gunwales are very low. A good bilge pump would be a necessity, storage space is minimal, especially after its rigged to pass coast guard regs. The good is that if you just need it as a means of transportation to/from reef it will work. Operation costs would be minimal, (depending on city rules) storage would be simple possibly even in a one car garage. Lastly, it should be easily towable behind almost any vehicle (smart cars and minis excluded) so most likely your current vehicle would be adequate. To me it looks like a v-hull aluminum jonboat with a 40hp on it. I know several months ago when my friend was looking for a jonboat and that there were lots f/s for very cheap on craigslist. I don't know what it would cost to buy one of those from a dealer, but a jonboat with some customization to suit your needs might be an idea.

something like this might be a starting point:

my uncle tells stories from the dive boat business about scary weather but never any pictures, his boat did get struck once and knocked him out for a while though. I don't like storms on the water I can't imagine what thats like.

practice will make you better, beach diving is very good exercise and will limit the depths you can reach, im getting comfortable in 30-40 and a little beyond, but i started out in 15-20 about a year ago.

I really like my pursuit speargun and for the cost it would be tough to beat. I've used a 120 mako and 42" biller as well and each has things I like and dislike. I like that I can hip load the Biller and that it doesn't have much kick, but thats about it, I hate that it has a safety. The Mako is hard for me to track through the water and is very noisy(rigging/shooting etc). My pursuit is a very manageable size for tracking through the water. Its super quiet which really suprised me after using the Mako, I expected all euros to be noisy. The only thing I dont like about my gun (and it has nothing to do with the gun and more to do with my lack of equipment) is that the loading butt is very small and since I don't own a wetsuit leaves me with some nasty bruises.

*this is NOT a paid Pursuit advertisement*

I just read the article on Yahoo News. Very Jaws like. I wonder how this will affect the scuba industry? When Jaws came out there was actually a decline in the industry growth for the first time. Only this isn't just a dumb movie. Crazy.

My grandpa ran a dive shop in Key Largo when Jaws came out, he still talks about what it did to business back then and how much he hates that movie.

That's not really important because they maximum force it has to withstand is the float buoyancy. The important thing is to be sure wether it really floats or not. I was checking at the website Don posted and it says that they don't.

agreed, I wonder if it would float if those big end loop rings were removed?
