Great looking avatar Carla.:thumbsup2: Sea Sniper or trygon ?

    Cheers,Don

Gil Gacula custom . I think I did him in , He is now retired after making this ebony/ dark purple gun for me. I love it! All the guys are jealous. Josh ( neptonics) made me a matching float line and kelp carrot, too!

Competitive freedivers enjoy the camaraderie and excitement of rescuing each other.

no we don't really "enjoy" rescuing each other but it is better than the alternative :rip:

I am sure she would prefer to remain anonymous but that is my friend, Klara Hanssen of Sweden. That was a bad blackout and not a single episode for her!

AIDA, the governing body of freediving, is now keeping count and making policy changes in order to reduce the occurrence of b/o's in training and comp. Although freediving is considered the 2nd most dangerous extreme sport;this is not the image we wish to portray.

Dan, I do have a sense of humor regarding my sport-- but I am the only here who can defend it! :)

    translator please :D :D lol

they send me messages on FB all the time in Italian - so I put in in the translator and it is so funny :laughing3:
I have had a lot of interesting emails when ordering from non-english speaking companies like Leader, Waterway, Trygons. Their english is far superior to my russian etc, though!

hey yall I so new at this freediving thing and am still doing pool work. my question is in reference to water in the ears- I would like to know how to prevent this if possible and how to care for this when I do get water in my ears. thanks

Hoping on one foot and shaking your head works ( I do it) but also just to make sure put a couple drops of isopropyl alcohol in each ear every time you get out of the water ( pool or ocean) . Get it at the drug store-very cheap and put in a little dropper or squeeze bottle. This will dry out your ears and prevent an infection. Make it a habit. You can wear ear plugs, too if you want but only Doc's pro plugs in the ocean . The best for the pool are those silicon ones.

this reminds us all to dive with a buddy and pay attention for at least 30 sec after surfacing. Because Kolt had a buddy to grab him, he recovered quickly and is just fine. If you black out or have a bad samba; you should not dive again that day but if you feel ok you can try some easy dives the next day.Be safe to dive another day!

c'mon Dan , that is an unfair assessment of competitive freediving. you ferreted out the gayest videos with some lame Euro-types doing boring statics. I personally, hate statics and only do them when forced.
here is a real record video -William Trubridge- no weight, no fins. His current record is 95m over 300ft. You can't imagine how hard this is to do. I do 50m and it is so physically demanding.

BTW. mrmike; they wear wetsuits because you get really cold when you do statics because you drop your heart rate so slow in order to conserve oxygen. you aren't moving at all and trying to stay warm and relaxed. the record for this is 11:35. and that is a really boring video!!! watching some guy (stephane mifsud) just laying in a pool for over 11 minutes.

As one of a few women here, personally, it doesn't bother me. I try not to use that word as it seems unladylike( and it would upset my mother) but I dive with guys and the usage is quite common worldwide.
You didn't ask me but since I am from Cali- there it is.

    Carla

    Core,
For some of less talented and anatomically impaired ( me!!!) equalizing hands-free with Frenzel or any technique is complicated. With a snorkel in my mouth; I can't use my tongue like a piston and push air from the roof of my mouth to get the equalization.I have to do weird jaw gyrations, grouper calls, you name it, and then, maybe, it works. Consider your self lucky that it isn't so difficult for you! I am envious.

Thanks. I wish I could. Mondays are always bad for me.

Is there any worthwhile benefit beyond not making fish scaring bubbles or psychological ones?

some people say it gives them a little refreshment :) but I don't think it really does much.It is good that you are breathing air into the mask on your descent. Mask squeeze is not pretty!
It is good to exhale slowly as you approach the surface so you are ready to take that recovery breath.

Sniffing the air back in won't really help you. That small amount of air might help a little( mostly mentally) if you are totally out of oxygen but it won't help in regards to black out.

the most important thing to do to avoid black out or samba upon surfacing is the" recovery" or"hook" breath. take a deep breath -hold for a count of 3 then exhale slowly. repeat this 3 times. Then start your normal breathing. You do not want to pant or breathe hard or fast. This way the oxygen goes to your brain and not just those expanding lungs.
If you watch videos of freedivers you will hear their coach yelling "hook" hook" when they surface .
Try to practice this on every dive so it becomes a habit even when just doing easy dives.

    Happy diving,
    carla

I've used the camos- they are nice. I am not sure about the carbons but I am checking with a friend who is a dealer for Leader. He will give an honest opinion . I know that he,personally, uses the camos.

    anybody looking for work? :rolleyes1:

Pipin Ferreras The DEEP QUEST INSTITUTE is looking for skilled spear fishermen with writing skills to help us with the development and promotion of the institute, send us an emaill

wow. that is so sad. I have a friend who got whacked in the stomach at about 30ft. by a still hot, 300lb tuna's tail .Knocked the wind out of him but fortunately, he was doing things right and had a buddy there to pull him up. Fish and spearos all good.Be safe guys!

May I be the first to call you a lucky SOB for having him as your coach? ;)

Also, while I don't know how the whole competition process works and such, it seems that a lot of the top name freedivers (Eg. Herbert Nitsch, Stephane Mifsud, Martin Stepanek, Tom Sietas, or Dave Mullins, for example on the guys side) aren't competing in the championship, which would seem like the largest/highest caliber competition. Is there any particular reason for this?

here is the video of Fredrick's new WR
    http://www.dailymotion.com/vid…pnee-dynamique-reco_sport

Herbert was there - laying on the bottom of the pool for like 6min filming. He would have to compete for Austria.:rolleyes1: He doesn't do pool events anymore. Dave should have but said he couldn't for some reason-- he did do Vertical Blue, though. Martin has not competed for some time. He was at the depth WC's and Vertical Blue but didnt dive. I think he is afraid of going head to head with Herb and William-- lol. We keep waiting for that! Competition is harder than record attempts- according to Herbert, and I take his word for it!
I didn't go cuz I didnt want to spend the money to travel and I am better in the no-fins events which are not in the team world championships. I did the indiv. wc's, though and Vertical Blue.
Each country is allowed 3 competitors and an alternate. Our best Rob King, was in France and not competing, either.
FYI- the World championships are held every 2 years. Depth, Pool, and Team- 3 different times and venues. Pool was Denmark, Depth-Bahamas, and Team -Okinawa.
    Hope that answers the ?
