I had some spare time yesterday, so i took the Pelaj handle apart. Found a broken spring that elevates the trigger sear. (the part that contacts the spear notch). Went to the shop and found a stainless spring that is a little larger gauge (22 or so), cut it to fit, and replaced it. It works fine now.

Put a 6.5 Sandivik shaft in it, and changed to 1 tight 16mm band instead of the 2 loose yellow bands that came with it. Cant wait to try it again.

A broke spring is not a bad thing. I have a European double shotgun that broke and had to be fixed, so I shouldnt be complaining about a speargun that I paid far far less for, and is used in the harshest environment.

Something filefishy mola molish triggerish can't tell driving me crazy :frustrated2:

You better know what it is! and tell us :)

    I agree!

I killed something similar last year, a great big whopping file fish. Biggest i had ever seen.
I cooked it and it was good, then my wife told me that she read they were poisonous.

    Oh well, im still here.

By the way, love your video. And your gun. What is the make of the wood gun? the one with the violet colored band, is it carbon?

I will tell you a fish that he has me hooked on as sashimi, King Mackerel.

Try that if you have not. The small Spanish are good also.

Didnt eat much raw fish before diving with Ced.

    Marco,

    I am curious;
What you are calling Bonito, is that the same fish as the Little Tunny that we have here in the Gulf Of Mexico?
They are called Bonito here also.

The Frenchman eats them, but I use them for bait.
He talked me into eating them prepared as sashimi once. I dont remember it as being bad, but I dont remember a lot as I had drank a lot of wine while cleaning fish that day.

I dive not too far from there, and have dove there in years past. I guess they have always been there, I have never seen one. Seen lots of bulls, tigers, hammerheads, blacktip, and such. Had guys tell me that they had seen whites in the past, but i always thought they were seeing makos. I can tell you this, thats not the only one out there, and they didnt just get there.

I will probably look a little harder when diving in bad vis now.

I eat Barracuda and Bluefish. I dont know anyone else here that does except for me and my dive buddies.

Funny though, for years i competed in a local spearfishing tournament. Everyone was asked to donate fish for the award day fish fry. The ONLY fish that i ever saw donated were Cuda and Spadefish. Everyone would say how good the fish was, but when asked if they would eat Cuda, they would say no.

The entire local population think that they are poisonous.

Now my friend Cedric, he doesnt cull anything. He talked me into eating Bonito. I did it to amuse him, but not again.

    Also,

Upon return there was a Mardi Gras Parade on the Island. We were stuck in traffic for 3 hours.

We didnt have any beer, so Ced proposed trading a Sheepshead to one of the Revelers for a 6 pack.
I have never laughed so hard as i did watching him asking Alabamians in his heavy French accent,

Excuze Moi, would you like the Sheephead for a six pack?

After about 5 attempts, someone took him up on the trade. :laughing3:

Video of our last trip. Note the Red Snapper. There is nothing special about these spots, just gas platforms in 60 or so feet of water. Been diving this area all my life, more Snapper here now than at any time. I remember seeing a lot in the 80's, but they were mostly small. There are more now, and they are all large. Saw far fewer Sheepshead than Snapper.

We have those in the Northern Gulf, scared to shoot them when the Amberjack season is closed though. The Marine Police cant tell the difference between Almaco (lesser) and Greater Amberjack.

Some of the Almaco here are 30 or so pounds.

    Good video,
the lesser Amberjack are much better on the table.

    Marco,

    How big was the Cuda?

    I am guessing 50 pounds.

I killed one last year close to that with a 100 cm pneumatic in bad visibility.

    Thanks for sharing
    Keith

A colleague of mine at work uses the coils on a pneumatic speargun. He says that he wraps #300 mono around a piece of 1/2" pvc pipe, makes notches in the pipe to secure the mono, and places it in boiling water for a few seconds to set the shape. He then crimps it to his gun as you would any other mono. He only shoots smaller fish though, probably around 10 lbs max from what I have observed.

    Welcome to the board.

I don't think so George. Most beginners who ask this question are looking to get more range. It makes no sense to lengthen shooting line just to fight a fish. For that there's the float line.

But if anyone's into that kind of nonsense, here's the perfect thing for you Speargun Auto Coil, 6 Feet.

I actually saw the aftermath of someone shooting an Amberjack with one of those on his gun. It was just a little squiggly broke piece of mono left.

    Many thanks my friend,

You have shown me everything i need to know.

    Thanks again!

    Keith

Thanks Marco, your advice (and recipes) are always welcome.

I took the gun apart, and found a broken spring that elevates the sear to the trigger. Found a spring and installed it I had to guess at the length, so sometimes i have to pull the trigger with the spear out befpre re loading. I will replace the spring with a little longer one, and it should be fixed.

Monster slayer, did you replace the wimpy bands with tighter ones?, if you did, i would be curious how the trigger performed.

By the way, i have several other guns including Rob Allens of the same length. Only got this one because i paid little for it new. Someone won it for a door prize at a local tournament, and was unable to load it. I gave him $100 for it and six of those yellow bands, and it was all still in the plastic.

It will be an extra on the boat.
