Khalel what type of large tip you shoot with?
The Riffe large tip. I also do this with it...

I shoot Spanish Macks from as small as 2-3lbs up to 14-15lbs with my Riffe Baja Plus with a large tip and 5/16 shaft and i dont have that problem. A sharp tip and good shot placement makes a big difference. I usually shoot them in the head or around the pectoral fin going forward. When they're big, a shot from above through the back at a forward angle or one just between the dorsal and anal fins work best. They usually just spin around on the shaft or shooting line. What i have experienced though is when the shooting line is too thin it cuts through them very easily if the placement is bad so in that case, just enough power for them to be shafted usually works.

Margate are fine eating. Just hard to process and small yield for their size. It makes me feel bad to kill a fish when what I have to throw away is 2/3 of it or more.
Thats why in Trinidad we cut them up and make a broth. Nothing is really wasted that way

the closest ive come to that is 3 Atlantic Spadefish

Yup thats the first thing i thought but if its any good, it could always be "the cheaper option" i guess. I wonder if anyone on the forum has ever used one and can give us a review.

Trinidad doesn't have clear water. It's true. We are the ass of the Caribbean and things get brown very often.
Lunk what the trini fellas dont tell ya is the water there is river green, low/bad vis is the standard fare, not my cup of tea at all but i am spoilt that way...:D
I beg to differ. When it comes to near shore diving, Trinidad may not have the crystal clear water like The Bahamas or many of the islands higher up the chain (including the sister isle Tobago) but it does have clear water. Its all about timing...the time of the year, the phase of the moon, the tides and the area u dive. I could go into more detail as to the different types of water we get and why but all in all, if you want to get fish you have to be or become a better all round hunter to spearfish in Trinidad because alot more factors come into play than just heading to a spot and diving.

Nice Cod! La Fillette always has the occasional big one.

The Spanish has gold spots whereas the Cero has a longitudinal stripe with its gold spots. A juvenile King has relatively small black spots that fade as they mature.

I have an experienced friend who got shot through his leg by his own gun while returning to the boat. A riffe 5/16 shaft with a large tip went into the side of his calf, grazed the shinbone, exited then re-entered through his foot and came out the bottom. All this because of one careless moment.
