Great, let me know when you are gonna order the pinch weights please.
I would like to order 5, 2lb weights. (winter is coming)
Maybe we could combine our order?
Sure thing man, I will let you know. When are you looking to order?

Yea, I haven't used any of hit products yet but I hear they are the best. I am ordering some pinch weights from him soon. But once I figure out the gun I want, same day the muzzle will be ordered for sure. Thanks again man. ![]()

Slainte.
Thanks brother
. I am probably going to get a new gun this winter so I will just wait out till then. I saw one of the Mako guns at the expo with an enclosed track that I may get once it comes out. I will just get a spike from TM then. ![]()
Yes I do, interested?
Yes I am. PM sent. Get back with me and we can arrange a time to meet. I am in Plantation.
Thanks TM. My front mount is held in by screws and I think has a plug; but it does have an enclosed muzzle. I imagine I will be getting a new gun anyway at the end of this season. Are the tubes on the guns like that designed to stay sealed for buoyancy? Mine floats well in the beginning but after an hour or so it fills with water and looses that capability. I wasn't sure if it holding air was by design or not. But I guess if they didn't want it to they would have made vent holes somewhere.
You still have the Naida?
I am looking for a kill spike for my JBL Magnum. I saw that Dan and Tin Man were discussing this before and had some prototypes made up. Are these in production/ are they available? If not does anyone have any suggestions for fabricating a mount or know of someone who makes them.
Well I created a post earlier seeing if anyone had an open spot for two spearo's in the Marathon/Lower keys area on the 22nd of this month but that seems like it may not work out so well being a weekday and all. So, does anyone have any good suggestions for a cattle boat we can take out that actually hits decent spots and allows spearing? We both really want to get out while in the keys so want to get it all booked early if need be. I have been pointed to the Mobile Diver boat and am certainly going to check it out, but in the event that doesn't work out are there any other suggestions? Thanks. ![]()
I don't know about the laws in PR but I know some of the ones here are misdirected, though with good intentions. I am studying now for a coastal zone management degree and I really hope to be able to make some difference and help to bring a balance as someone who wears the hats of both a fisherman and a conversationalist or scientist. I think that both sides fail to fully see the reasons for the other and both have valid concerns. Some people though do ruin it for all of us by not respecting the laws, protected or endangered species and harvest seasons and thus forcing closures and restrictions that wouldn't otherwise exist. I heard someone the other day say they think spearing should be outlawed and fishing all but.
Me and a buddy of mine will be down in Key West for Hemingway Days and would like to do some spearing while there. We are hopefully grabbing a boat on that Thursday around Marathon but once down in KW would like to explore a little. I have fished a bunch down there over the years but never speared. We don't have a boat so we are hoping to find some spots reachable from shore, within a reasonable swim, that we can find dinner. Not looking for anything huge (though that works too
) just looking for dinner. Will have the Women and his kid in tow so if there's a place we can go that has a decent place for them to hang out and the little one to play (on shore that is) all the better. Doesn't need to be in KW, just within a short drive. Thanks. ![]()
I would have to say it is mostly your behavior and body posturing. I know that when I first started diving sharks would scare the hell out of me and I would act differently for sure, even made the mistake of heading for the boat once and was chased by a good size black tip (hey I was like 15). They more often than not would stay around or come in closer; even had to cancel a few dives because of aggressive sharks. But now if a shark is acting aggressive or seems it may come in for an opportunistic meal many times rather than wait for them to come in I swim at them quickly with spear at the ready. It may take a few charges but they always swim off. Think of how big you look with long fins and a spear gun in hand. I do not however do this if they are just in the area passing through; No sense in getting them defensive if they are just observing. But even with that, I still want to get a PH or two, because if the shark decides he doesn't want to leave or wants your fish, he wins. I think me spearing the fish while a shark was present would depend on how many there are, and how they are acting. You have to adjust for the situation and develop an instinct on when it is safe or not to fire. For instance, a few weeks ago in the gulf we had to pass no some nice grouper out deep because there were like half a dozen 5'-6' sharks lingering close, just waiting for a chance; and a frenzy would suck to be stuck in at 100'. But I have also speared with sharks near by and had no issues. you have to read the situation. Perhaps I am wrong, just my 2c.
And I forget who mentioned the Bison, but I was charged by a big bull Bison and a damn huge Bull moose in the Grand Tetons a few years back (same weekend). That is a frightening animal to have baring down on you. Thank god for the jeep.
if a cobia, large cuda, kingfish, or random nice jack swims past, i want to be able to land that fish and my shooting line is alone is not sufficient
Good point lunker. It's getting built either way so I am good to go. Hopefully I see one of those fish I will need it for. ![]()
It has been my experience that, even with larger sharks, that if they are staying around and getting close that if I act as the aggressor and swim at them they scare off. Kinda of unnerving when it is a bigger one; but I have had it work even with a good size hammer. With gun, fins, arms stretched, and me being 6'3" I look about 15' long to a shark. The only time I get really weary is in low vis, especially with hurt and bleeding fish in the water. I saw a white in the gulf when diving the middle grounds once and that about gave me a f'ing heart attack. One and only white I ever saw and she was big. But I 100% agree, respect them as top predators and that we are in their home hunting what they also eat. With respect comes more safety; and not talking about them helps with the nerves for sure.
Is a FL and float even necessary in shallow water? I was testing out a FL I picked up today with fishing dude and though it worked well I found myself wondering if it was even needed. What are the benefits of using these in shallow water? I know in deeper water they are useful for larger fish, but in close are they? Still going to make one out of a boogie board I found, but that's just for the enjoyment of making one.
I don't see any point to the tube style float line. There's a thread about it here with input from guys who favor it that you could read, I think I started the thread.
Yea I had read that one and was thinking the same thing really. I mean they look cool but if a polypro line is buoyant then there seems no need if it is strong enough.
I also just read a thread making a FL from tube with mono inside, sealed on the ends. Seems a tad more involved but look nice. Would you think they are really necessary though or would a simple rope set up work? If anything I will just purchase one from RA.
I am glad I came across this post as I am looking to make a FL. I found a Lehigh 1/4 In. x 100 Ft. Black & Yellow Braided Polypropylene line at Home Depot for under$8 (link below). It is supposed to float and they claim it will not rot or mildew, even when stored damp. Would you think this would work? I am going to use a carabiner and swivel similar to Dan's set up on a boogie board float I am making.
Lunker, I considered that but I know from experience with spray paint it wont hold up and will be scratched to hell in no time. There have a few ideas for acrylic paint on here but that seems more involved than I want to get. May just buy some camp tape from Mako.
I have an older JBL magnum and for now it works till I can afford a new/better gun; it kills fish so...
I know there is probably little benefit or functionality to this but I was considering coating it in the same type of liner that one would coat a truck bed with. A buddy of mine has an Ocean Rhino that is coated in it and it looks pretty sick. I am just not sure how this may effect the functionality of the gun, being a more lightweight aluminum gun and not a bulky heavy duty wooden gun like the OR. This is just more for looks and to aid a little in "camo" (it's bright and silver colored now). A light coat should shouldn't weigh too much. Any thoughts?
Shawn, here is the float I am referring to

Nice. I wouldn't do that to my board though since I still surf it and it cost way to much to risk breaking/damaging. Cool set up though.
