Anyone in the Broward area want to head out Sunday? I know it's Easter but not sure when I'll have another chance for a while. I just spent a week in Belize studying fish I couldn't shoot (MPA) so I want to put some on the grill!

My masters thesis is actually going to be on the inclusion and exclusion criteria for HMS in the MSFCMA. It's odd to me that Wahoo were never placed into the HMS category. Same with Black Fin Tuna, they are not considered HMS under the MSFCMA but Yellow fin are. It's going to be interesting finding out why this is.

There are plans for a 1000000 square kilometer no take sanctuary to be put into effect in the Coral Sea.
Sign the Petition and stop crazy, unnecessary crap like this.
ACT NOW - SAVE SPEARFISHING IN THE CORAL SEA

Unfortunately the area of the CS is severely overfished because of some of the local governments historically relaxed regs on commercial fishing; especially long line fishing. There seems to be several species that are listed as vulnerable to extinction by IUCN. I am not read up on the stock assessments for that area but perhaps a total ban is a tad excessive; especially something so selective as spearing.

Red Tide. Fisheries management is far from a joke. Without regulations the seas would be wiped clean of fish very quickly. I think that one of the issues causing people to have such a mindset is a lack of understanding of the real situations; something I place on the shoulders of the fisheries scientist. I am actually in school studying fisheries management and am working on helping to bridge that gap t gain a better understanding for the betterment of all. The system is far from perfect but it is also a necessary system if we are to have any sort of ocean to enjoy.

Learning to surf changed my life and is what brought me to be so close with the ocean. Living in Ft. Lauderdale there is little to no surf which kills me (actually had more spots on the Gulf Coast). This is actually a tad ironic as I just stripped the wax from my board and made the decision to start making the drive north (~ an hour) and start surfing again. May even buy a paddle board so I can surf these piddly ass little waves we get here. There is nothing in the world that can replace surfing for me......though freediving does come in a close second. :cool2:

south florida surfing is an oxymoron lol,,, aallthoughhh ive seen delray jack up real nice so not entirely

No way man, I have surfed from Pompano and Jupiter area many times. I have seen surfable waves in Miami in winter. Shit, even commercial pier has some decent breaks from time to time. My girlfriends brother grew up surfing this area. And if I can find surf on the Gulf coast I can find it on this coast for sure.

Just tossing a line out. I have a nice board sitting in my place collecting dust that I want to put to use. Winter is rolling in so the waves will be picking up. Typically requires a drive north but if anyone is down once the surf rolls in shoot me a message. Cheers. :cool2:

My neighbor has a massive mango tree I had planned on raiding once they ripened up (he just lets them fall and rot). I will keep this in mind if I decide to go about it. Plenty of topical OTC meds I am sure would assuage the pain.

I agree; clean kill=stone shot and if I miss the stone shot I hit it with a knife to the brain as soon as I get to it to reduce suffering. It's like when I H&L fish I hate just tossing them into the cooler to slowly suffocate; seams cruel to me. I actually just got a kill spike (carried on a forearm strap) for this very reason and always kill them before the cooler when on H&L.

Lunker, you beat me to the sniper reference. OSOK! lol :cool2:

Id like to add that I am not sure fish feel pain as mammals do. Most studies in sharks and rays suggest that they do not feel pain as they lack the neurochemistry. I am not sure if this applies to fish or not but even lacking the sensation of pain it has been shown that fish do experience a (loosely defined) type of psychological trauma from being caught and this obviously would apply to a shaft through their side. But my reasons still apply for the quick death.

Where are you doing the research? In Southwater Marine Reserve? I know there is a small island next to Southwater Caye that is a research station. I go down that way but farther south, out of the reserve. I have some nice spots down there. If you want, contact me when you get here.

Yea, I will be on South Water Caye from March 23rd till March 30th. I am meeting with the professor running the study and I will see what the deal is with being able to take off. The study is ran by the University so they may not be cool with it for issues of culpability if anyone is lost/hurt. But if I can get away I will for sure let you know. Cheers

So can't wait to get to Belize in March! Doing research on one of the islands on the barrier reef but hoping to get some spearing in during the little down time I will have.
