When things get back on track you have to come down
    for a little offshore adventure!!

I have had my fill of the murk and Wsb for the year
and Really miss the smell of tuna blood :)

I am ready for another trip south like you, Noah, Ike and I made last year. I hope the water warms up soon.

Ha! Darren and I have a trip planned for Santa Barbara Island in two weeks. I really don't give a crap about it so long as people don't talk about it too much. Enough talk might unnerve me. I figure its just part of life. Darren who is the trip leader may think different though. It should be interesting.

I dove with several sharks in Hawaii, and a couple small blue sharks out here. But that was in really clean water. I am not really concerned about sharks in clear water. You can see them and read their behavior (to a point). If they are acting aggressive, it is time to get out of the water. If they are being casual, then I would probably stay in, but I would be keeping an eye on the shark.

I haven't heard any good reports of YT yet. Hopefully things change by time we leave.

Went out this afternoon in Central OC. We found vis in some spots to be as good as 15-18 feet. Lots of areas weren't nearly that good. I had a great dive. As I was sitting on the bottom, I had several small WSB swim above me. As soon as I surfaced a larger, legal WSB cruised under me. I had no shot. A few dives later I was scanning a small sand patch near some kelp looking for hali's. None found, but there sitting near a piece of kelp on the edge was a BSB. I have had fleeting glimpses of BSB in the past, but this guy just sat there. He wasn't huge, maybe 50 pounds. He just slowly cruised around. There was a decent calilco hanging right by the BSB's tail. I passed up on numerous shots on calico's and sandies. I kept thinking as soon as I shoot a calico, my wsb would re-appear. We never found any halibuts, never saw any more wsb. Although at one point I thought I heard some croaking. Late in the dive I found a sand patch that had several bat rays hanging out on. I made some dives looking for hali's. Several more batrays came in and circled above me. It was a pretty cool sight.

It was a very enjoyable dive. I ended up taking one sargo at the very end of the dive.

By the way, anybody have a report for PV? Thinking about diving there early tomorrow morning.

    Thanks,
    Darren

Dove at Carlsbad today. There was some pretty big surf coming in. We had, at best, 8 foot vis. At the bottom, vis dropped to less than 4. Really heavy surge. No fish seen by me. Capt Leo took one spot fin. Temp was really nice. Maybe around 67.
The water looked much nicer from Dana Point down to the Barn. From the Barn south, conditions looked much worse.

I am glad that you posted the story. I really wish I could have gone with you that day. Oh well. Maybe I can be there when you get you first hali!

    Hello to all,

First let me introduce myself. I am Darren Essman. I live in Irvine and I dive mostly in Laguna. I have been spearing now for 1 1/2 years. It has been a very fun and exciting 1 1/2years! I have been to numerous MLPA meetings and held a few partys to raise money for the Waterman's Alliance.

Second, let me just thank everyone here for this board. I look forward to being a part of it.

    Darren
