Moving to CA and thinking about getting into spearfishing. Any suggestions on how to learn? Where to go around LA?

First and foremost, learn the regs and learn to ID fish. The start to learn how to gauge the size of the fish in the water. Not sure when you are moving out, but we are getting ready to loose a huge amount of fishing area. So, make sure you learn the area well.

When I first moved out here, people told me diving in CA was like diving in cold pea soup. I have found that the experience of diving here is completely unlike anywhere else. Yes, we can have days of really shitty vis and cold water, and we can have days of very nice vis, and "warm". Those days, diving in the rocks and kelp, are amazing! With the proper gear, you can be comfortable in just about any conditions.

Take your time, be careful. The surf out here can be dangerous. Watch out for the boaters and jet skiers, and the crazy environazi's.

Other than that, just enjoy the water!

    Welcome,
    Darren

The batteries hold a charge for a long time. I have my personal Gopro sitting on a shelf for months without charging and today I turned it on to test someone's SD card and the battery indicator is still full. If your question is how long the battery lasts in operation I don't know the answer.

I ship orders next day at the latest and sometimes the same day depending on what time the order was placed, with USPS priority (2-3 business days). Express next day service is available if you want to pay more.

Yes, I was asking how long a fully charged battery would hold it's charge while not in use. Basically, if I charged up 4 batteries before heading to Baja, would the hold the charge for a four day trip. Sounds like, by your experience, they will last much longer than that. Good to know.

    Thank you!

Currently, I have an Olympus Tough 8010 mounted on my speargun. I am considering buying the GoProHero HD to wear on my head. This will allow me to fillm from two angle continously.

I am going to try the Window Movie Maker Live. The Movie Maker I am running on my computer does not work with MP4 files. I have to degrade them to edit. I have a few things on youtube that are degraded versions. If I can find a good editing suite, I will re-do the videos and post again.

I want to get the Hero ASAP as I am planning a trip to Baja. I am thinking about picking up a couple extra batteries. Do you know how long they will hold a charge?

    Thanks!
    Darren

    Thanks.
Yeah I looked at that on the web last night, I'll lock in something soon after Xmass day and my kid's presents are
handled. I might just work a little longer next couple weeks and hang it at the Hilton near Darren and a longer pool for late night gun tests.:D;)

    Cheers, Don

NICE!!!! I have been thinking about picking up a 130 SS from J&J. I'll need a place to test it out. Beers and pool/speargun testing. Awesome!:toast:

Cool,:cool2: I'll tell you about my friends 12 stitches he got when we tried to mix beer and gun tests.:@ many years ago.

    Cheers, Don

I'm glad you and your dad are coming down, my son will like meeting you guys.:thumbsup2:
This is going to be so cool.

Darren, I wonder if the Hilton has a Disco...:D Mandy is a dancing fool.

    Cheers, Don

There is a small bar at the Hilton. I don't think it has a dance floor. But with enough alcohol, any place can be a disco!:toast:

    Report from yesterday:

Dove in Laguna around 10:30. Vis was a beautiful blue 25' away from the kelp. Inside the kelp was more like 15-18 and greenish. We had a few sets of bigger waves come through and really stir up the bottom. Lots of bait, but know big game fish. No hails, no wsb, no yt, a few barely legal calicos and sheeps, no sandies... Hell I didn't even see any bat rays. Very nice being in the water, but I was really hoping for more targets.

Now, I know everyone is going to say I am crazy or just wrong but I found an ab that is at least 11". I don't have a gauge. Instead I held a piece of eel grass between my first finger and my thumb with both hands. The rest of my fingers were streched outright, so my hands and the eel grass resembled an ab gauge. Doing so allowed me to get the most accurate diameter of the shell. Once I had my fingers on the edge of the ab and the eel grass was pulled tight, I simply pinched the grass to break it. The eel grass was not bent around the shell. The eel grass measured 11.25 inches. I am going to take a ruler and a camera out next time!
