New Member in MI Moving to CA

  • Moving to CA and thinking about getting into spearfishing. Any suggestions on how to learn? Where to go around LA?

Hello and welcome. California is a big place and has a lot of coast line. We might be able help you a little more if you give us an idea of where to in California you are moving, your age and experience in the water. A name might help too. There is a lot of information on this board and helpful people who may be willing to take you out.

Get your gear on and go in someplace where its real calm,if you don't feel right about that try you and your gear in a pool.Do that awhile until you feel good about going in the ocean.Don't bring a gun with you for awhile.Do you have any time in the Ocean diving?

First and foremost, learn the regs and learn to ID fish. The start to learn how to gauge the size of the fish in the water. Not sure when you are moving out, but we are getting ready to loose a huge amount of fishing area. So, make sure you learn the area well.

When I first moved out here, people told me diving in CA was like diving in cold pea soup. I have found that the experience of diving here is completely unlike anywhere else. Yes, we can have days of really shitty vis and cold water, and we can have days of very nice vis, and "warm". Those days, diving in the rocks and kelp, are amazing! With the proper gear, you can be comfortable in just about any conditions.

Take your time, be careful. The surf out here can be dangerous. Watch out for the boaters and jet skiers, and the crazy environazi's.

Other than that, just enjoy the water!

  • Welcome to the forum.I would get into skin diving first and find comfort in the sea , followed by ascendv6's
advice. Safety first, go slow, enjoy the journey
