The bigger of the rock fish I saw was actually hovering next to a kelp stock about two to three feet off the bottom. All the others were on rocks. The only reason I paid any note to it is it was the first time I can recall seeing these fish in a spot I had dove several times before and never seen any.

    Thanks.[/QUOT

Steve, I believe you are referring to Sugar or Jonny bass. I could be mistaken, but that's what we call them and they are tasty. I've just stabbed them a few times instead of shooting cause they are so dumb. They taste as good as they are dumb too:crazy:

Haha. My first thought when I saw them was, "oh look a sugar bass" but I was pretty confident that that's just what the deck hands call them (Sounds more appetizing than Rock fish) and I didn't want to get laughed off the forum for calling them that. This is the first time I've seen them there, do you see them pretty regularly? Despite being tasty I still don't think I'll shoot any until my WSB taste has been satisfied.

    Thanks.

    Nice Stringer Alex:

I saw a few of those on a recent dive, including a real pig about 15"-16" and fat. I was sure they were rock fish but didn't know what kind or the regs. on them plus I was looking for WSB so I didn't take them. Nice to know they can be taken. The fish I saw were sitting right on the rocks and were reticent to move unless I tickled them with the spear tip. Does that sound like the same fish? Is there a size limit?

If you are prone to fear and panic, don't ever go alone; otherwise, start today. Obviously, you need to be really honest with yourself when asking that question. I also don't know you or your environment, but for me here in California there is very little a buddy can do for me in an emergency situation unless we start diving one up, one down which I just don't do.

I hope you find a buddy though. Its nice to have someone to enjoy the adventure with.

    Welcome to the board.

That's terrific and encouraging. It sounds to me like the group you were working with was actually focused on an honest goal of protecting a fishery as opposed to being a group that just wants hands off disguised as a group concerned about a fishery.

    Congratulations and thanks.

I think it comes in any color you want, so long as its black. I received mine Friday, I ordered it from Dan and received it very quickly. Thanks Dan.

I haven't had it with me on a dive yet but went through some of the on-line tutorials on how the dive functions operate. It arrived asleep, but set for accurate time and date so I didn't read up on the watch function, however two days later California changed to day light savings and I easily adjusted the time without the manual. My point being that it was very intuitive. My dive partner Darren uses one and it seems to work very well.

    Thanks Dan.

Thank you, I'm sure she is right there playing with my dogs and cats.:toast:

    Cheers, Don

Stephan no!!! I am so sorry for your loss brother...that is a huge loss.

I know she is chasing birds in god's ponds now...so sorry for you man:(:toast:

Thanks and sorry guys and Daniel. Didn't mean to get heavy or derail. Enough time has passed but Don's picture made me think and actually gave me a chuckle about how seriously cheap I am:D on some spending like spear gear but will blow it on other things like dogs.

Most of my gear is second hand, no all of it is..:thumbsup2:

    Rerail.

    --------------------------------------------------------
    Total.... around $5,700
    ---------------------------------------------------------

I think I spent 2x that one day on a vet bill that extended my dogs life about 36 hours. I'd do it again. But that probably also explains why my total gear cost is probably less than 2k. I hope the picture Don posted is where she is now.

    Thanks Don great pic.

Nice bass. Way to go. Nice colors too. Post up pics of the spearo with his perch. I love a stoked spear fisher pick regardless of the trophy. Thanks for the report.

    :D Good question

There are some bigger lakes but i dont like fresh water fish so much thats why i spearfish in france;)
But I dont know anybody who is spearfishing here^^ there is a shop though www.spearfishing.de
thats where i get all my stuff.

    Greetings

I did a little fishing on the Sihlsee in Einsiedeln, Switzerland. The water looked clear and there some very large Hecht (pike or muskie) and nice barsch (yellow perch). Also a little fishing on the Aasee aus Ibbenburen, Germany. Beautiful places to visit in the summer.

Typical German. Communicating in English far better than most Americans.:thumbsup2:

I have a lot of family in Germany, but nobody who spears. To them it seems such a foreign idea in my experience. I will read your post and look forward to your fish stories. If you are ever in Southern California, please drop me a message and we'll make a dive.

    Welcome to the board.:toast:

 well written Steve. Much respect to the Cali ab divers.

Why do you have to drive 2 hours north?

Probably because he lives 2 hours South of the area where take is legal and productive. For me it would be about six hours. I hear they are tasty but I don't need any snail that bad. There are abs all along CA but there is no take allowed in Southern CA.

When you wrote that you saw the remora and the cobia, I thought you were going to shoot the cobia.

You would have gotten extra brownie points for that. I probably would have just fouled my suit. Glad you're able to hoist a beer with all limbs attached.
