Here's what you're gonna get in Southern California
We dive year round. Personally I use a 7mil in the winter as I'm a puss. Water temps range from 55 degrees in the winter (a cold day) to 72 degrees in the summer (a warm day) 20' vis is a decent day on the coast, but makes hunting easier. 20-30'days are not unheard of and we do get 50' at times. 30-80' vis at the islands is not uncommon.

If you're going to SD, you've got Baja right next door which has world class waves and diving within an hour of your doorstep. Cost of living is expensive here but the weather in SD is the most temperate in the nation with an average of 73 degrees daily. The chicks are hot and slightly stuck up but there's plenty of transplants (also hot) with better attitudes.

Here's a few pics of our "small fish" and assorted other species

That is a hell of a calico. What did it weigh in at?

You can dive year round. I dive in a 5mm in the winter, but I get cold after about three hours in 56-58 degrees.

I used to dive in the Keys, and South Florida. I remember looking at the water and thinking, "Vis is only like 40 feet, I am not getting in." Now I think, "vis is is 15?!? HELL YEAH! "

We have tons of reef and game fish, you just have to change your expectation of what they are. A 6 pound calico is a very tough animal to hunt, but oh so tasty! We have 50-60 piound White sea bass and good sized halibuts.

There is nothing in the world like diving in a kelp forest.

These pictures are from an epic day of 20+ foot of vis. San Diego can get better. It is a short run to the Coronado Islands were vis can get 80+

Darren , find a way onto captian Ron or Baltas boat ,,, you need a guide / Sherpa to put you on your first

Theres No secret spots only times ;)... good luck hope you make it happen soon ,,, Joe

    One of these days!

Day 5: I did see a wsb, but I saw it at the end of my breath hold, and out of range. He took off and I never saw it again. Left my watch at home, but temps felt a bit warmer than the past few days. Vis on the inside was pretty decent, 10-12ish. Very green and hazy on the outside.

    Darren

day 4 looks not so pleasent, i hate not seeing the bottom until the last moment..viz on the first day looked good though

Todays vis was not great. It was actually better than it looks on the video. I have the color filter wrong. Day one was great vis. That day was just a fun dive all around.

The first two days were in basically the same area. The thrid day was same general area, but swam south instead of north. Day 4 was about 35 miles south. Depth ranged from 10 feet to 45 feet. I typically will dive for about three hours.

Conditions are looking good for tomorrow. I am diving back up north later in the afternoon on the incoming tide.

I will post a video of shooting a calico today, later.

    Darren

I am on vacation all week. I made it a goal to dive every day.

Day 1. PV No WSB. Water temp was 60-61, really nice vis, very little swell or surge. Lots of fish, but very little bait. Had the big gun and was waiting for the WSB so no fish taken.

Day 2. PV No WSB. Water temp was 57-58, Vis not as good, swell and surge picking up. No fish seen. I think the vis made the holes just that much darker, that I couldn't see the fish that were holed up. Brought the small gun, but couldn't find anything to shoot.

Day 3. PV No WSB. Water temp was 58-59, vis was pretty crappy at the surface. Swell picked up and the wind was pretty strong. It was rough out there. Vis opened up on the bottom. Saw some fish, but no bait. Took the big gun. Too big for the vis.

    No video

Day 4. CDM and CC No WSB. Water temp was 59-60. Vis was anything from crappy to decent. Swell had dropped. Looked for reef fish and halibut. Took the small gun and shot a calico.

I am interested in the Black Teams. What are you looking for in a trade? I am trying to clear out a bunch of unused gear. I have a bunch of square nothched 5/16 flopper shafts in 59 and 64" lengths and various others in round or sqaure notched, threaded and flooper.

Let me know what you're looking for. If I don' have anything of interest, I will just send the $.

    John,
I have some one out here that is supposed to be picking the Black Teams up. If it falls through, I'll let you know.

I have a pair of Black Teams, sized 42-44 for sale or trade. They are scratched, but in pretty good shape. $65.

I have one Spetton Mat-Mas Pro-2 blade and footpocket, sized 43-45. The other was last seen dropping into the deep off SD. I would like to find a matching fin and foot pocket. If anyone has one, please let me know!

    Thanks,
    Darren

I can think of one thing I don't want to see. And its name is Daniel! Just kidding buddy  Someone bring Daniel a 40 of Mickey's malt liquor, he loves it! :laughing3:

Are you giving Daniel a ride home? If so, I will make sure he is really drunk! Of course that will only take one beer.:toast:

So pumped, James from FourSeas Spearguns is bringing my new custom gun, it will be on display for the day, and then he will be bringing it back to Colorado to finish it off just in time for seabass. 50 inch midhandle hybrid.

Yeah, I can't wait to see his guns. Actually, there really isn't anything at this show that I don't want to see! It is going to be a hell of a great time.
