Stay-cation

  • I am on vacation all week. I made it a goal to dive every day.

Day 1. PV No WSB. Water temp was 60-61, really nice vis, very little swell or surge. Lots of fish, but very little bait. Had the big gun and was waiting for the WSB so no fish taken.

Day 2. PV No WSB. Water temp was 57-58, Vis not as good, swell and surge picking up. No fish seen. I think the vis made the holes just that much darker, that I couldn't see the fish that were holed up. Brought the small gun, but couldn't find anything to shoot.

Day 3. PV No WSB. Water temp was 58-59, vis was pretty crappy at the surface. Swell picked up and the wind was pretty strong. It was rough out there. Vis opened up on the bottom. Saw some fish, but no bait. Took the big gun. Too big for the vis.

    No video

Day 4. CDM and CC No WSB. Water temp was 59-60. Vis was anything from crappy to decent. Swell had dropped. Looked for reef fish and halibut. Took the small gun and shot a calico.

  • The first two days were in basically the same area. The thrid day was same general area, but swam south instead of north. Day 4 was about 35 miles south. Depth ranged from 10 feet to 45 feet. I typically will dive for about three hours.

Conditions are looking good for tomorrow. I am diving back up north later in the afternoon on the incoming tide.

I will post a video of shooting a calico today, later.

  • day 4 looks not so pleasent, i hate not seeing the bottom until the last moment..viz on the first day looked good though

Todays vis was not great. It was actually better than it looks on the video. I have the color filter wrong. Day one was great vis. That day was just a fun dive all around.

  • It will happen for you soon, it's going to warm up Fri, work it early or late incoming.

Maybe I can buddy dive next weekend if you want.

  • I'm doing the same thing, with a few exceptions. I took 5 weeks off just to hunt seabass. When everybody asks me if I'm going to Baja, I tell them "only if the swell ruins the diving here." I've had a decent run, but usually I take Sat+Sun off so I can let the masses pound the area and I spend a little quality time with the wife. Once Monday comes around. full speed diving again when the crowds slack off (sometimes).

I get really frustrated diving some of those beds in PV when I'm running into 4-6 divers in the same bed over the course of a dive. Plus I get alittle scared. Lot of itchy trigger fingers out there in dirty water!

Good luck on the rest of your vacation, let's see some footage of that first big seabass!

  • Day 5: I did see a wsb, but I saw it at the end of my breath hold, and out of range. He took off and I never saw it again. Left my watch at home, but temps felt a bit warmer than the past few days. Vis on the inside was pretty decent, 10-12ish. Very green and hazy on the outside.

Try pulling off your hood for a few minutes as you swim, listen to the sound as you hold the gun and swim.
If the camera can pick it up on play back the WSB hear it from 100'' away.

There are several different styles that work this time of year, lets get out for some Irish and a Beer and we'll have a class. 1. WSB move with no current. 2. AM feed..PM feed. 3. A dark moon makes first light more important to a hungry fish and just before sunset as vision of bait will diminish sooner. A full moon allows fish to feed all night, so the AM is not as productive to spear. I have spots at Cat that I can get a WSB 50% of the time( at the magic time;) all with in 30 mins each day but water temp and lunar cycle rule. ....Believe it or not.;)

    While we're on the subject....

Me and Dillon were at the the little league field and I watched him pitch to a 12 year old kid with a learning disorder. The boy sent 6 balls high over center field and no one but the 3 of us saw it, no coach's, parents, or reporters from the local paper. I asked him if he would join a team and he replied no thanks,'' I just like to see them fly through the air and over the fence''. The moral of the little story is: if no one sees or reads that he is a home run hitter that rejects the noise of the crowd he wont be ranked in my kids league stats.....and to him it doesn't matter.
Like the Sax player in Joni Mitchel's park......'' He was playin it all for free''.

Personally I know guys that hunt like it's religion. spear huge fish over a twenty five year weekly Mass, but don't share take's with the the list keepers.in my clan let alone SB, Clubs, or the wild wild west.
