Orcas breaching off the Newport Beach coast.

  • I assumed they were here to feast on the over-population of the sea lions but I read an article that said they are eating sharks.

  • The late Neptune Pres (Bill Kroll) and I had a pair hang with us for 10 mins on a hi spot near Todos Santos Mex.
We could hear the Oraca's harmonic sounds from 2 miles away:@ but we were in the last hour of a Blue Water comp and didn't want to leave the water. I had convinced him that they were too smart to eat us.
Jay Riffe buzzed up to us with a boat load of divers as they had been ''chased'' off their hot spot, he thought we were nuts staying in the water with them, but I shot a big Yellowtail and the Oraca's could care less. They were a sight I will never forget, their eyes are amazing, they look right into your soul. You can almost feel their intelligence....Truly amazing lords of the sea.

Maybe now that I'm a dad I may take less risk, and jump in on a pod, but if your 500' way from da boat you might as well just dive and enjoy them...their going to do what ever they want anyway.

    Cheers, Don
