Vertical reels should have the handle on the left side if looking from the top of the gun so that you can flip them over and wind all the line in with your right hand and use your left to steady the gun and evenly distribute the line going on the reel. All i use is verticals these days, much more user friendly IMO.

I'm going to be around the north island primarily from late November or so to April. I've got a brand new 3.5mm open cell wetsuit on the boat (for sure coming with me), and a somewhat worn 7mm open wetsuit I can bring.

Published summer water temp ranges are 18-22C, which pretty much says buy a 5mm. Should I buy 5mm or just try and ride it out with the 7mm, or buy 5mm and bring 7mm?

I dove Bay of Islands in 2004 in a worn out surf suit and froze.

    I honestly wish I would have bought a 7mm instead of a 5mm
I got cold a lot on that trip

I'd go open track dude, you aren't going to be shooting enough bands or far enough to make a difference on a 48" especially in dirty water, might as well save the track for a build where an ET is going to really give you some benefit or return it. Otherwise Woodguy covered everything I could think of and more.

That rubber buttpiece will fall off the gun if it's not glued or secured. I lost mine when I took it diving.

I guess they have fixed that on the new ones coming from the factory. They changed something, claim they wont come off anymore but guys who use them will find out if they are lying or not. I don't like the ergonomic handle at all on the lasers, they are coming out with a new dangelo II with the I grip though so I may switch to that instead of the d angelo I with meandros mechanism I'm shooting now. Only problem is I really like the meandros mech so I probably wont switch. They are also doing a lefty grip if you actually do like the ergo grip and shoot lefty.
All the stuff is going to be at the blue wild I guess.
Talks of an ET too, who knows what will make it to the show though it is a greek company :D

Check out the subcraft blades with a set of pathos pockets. They were the "best" carbon fins in terms of response tested by a some of the "elites" of the sport here in the us their factory burnt down a while ago and the company finally has resumed production. I dive bleutecs these days in pathos pockets and I'm pretty happy. the pathos pockets are hands down the best pockets I've ever used, you can used a heat gun to custom mold them to your fins which is awesome. With my C100's I stuck em into pathos pockets and had pretty damn good results too, it voids the warranty but IDGAF if the blade response is better and the pockets fit me better.
So far the fins I have spent a lot of money on that were actually worth it were:
    bleutecs
    speardiver c100's
    omer rekords
    specialfins hybrid professionals
I have access to a pair of the new subcrafts too but I am not sure if I will try them or not as pathos is set to release fins next year that I will probably get to test out and im plenty happy with the bleutecs in the meantime. I think the fins I dove the deepest in and actually shot fish in were the specialfins in old blackteam pockets but that shit almost literally killed me.

I've noticed that a whole lot of the best European divers use weights attached to a floatline that they ditch a depth. For deeper wreck/boat diving it seems like it would be much safer to use this technique. You could wear no weight on your belt and use a weight on a float that would make a much smoother decent than you would be comfortable with on your belt. I was wondering if any of you guys use this method?? I know that using a ton of weight to go beyond your limits is a really bad idea, but I'm not talking about that.

This is called pendulum diving. Whole lot of risks and dangers with the technique.
That being said I'm starting to get into it. You dont take all the weight off your belt, enough so you are neutral at the target depth. On the line you put more than you would wear, the idea is the weight does the work for you on the way down.
    Be safe.

yo monster slayer where are you in baja?
I drive down at least every few months and even more often in the summer
trying to spend 3 months there next summer actually
    we should dive

Nice stringer Kyle, I think you just nuked'em with those Ray Beam eyes.:D;) Thanks for the report mate.

    Cheers, Don

haha thats the way I do it!

Nice fishing! Dont think I would have the balls to night dive or dusk dive in big shark country where you guys are :@
    What model Pathos is that?

    my 90 is the pro
my 130 is the laser that i swapped out a d'angelo I handle with
    Guns are sick

I've shot a lot of fish with a 6.5mm shaft the past few months
my favorite diameter for a 90.
It got roasted after 1 day in baja but the one I had was stainless not spring steel. I worked it over my knee after every 20# leopard I shot to get it straight again for the last 2 days of the trip haha. I keep my tip super sharp, no penetration issues even on those big reefmaster sheepshead, brained a whole panga full of those one day with my 90 and a 6.5mm shaft. I'm going to have to get a handfull of spring steel ones though, might be headed off to the baja for 3 months next summer :@
I have one for my 130 too but im guessing its going to last 10 seconds in mexico, would probably last forever here in CA waters but even my 7 got bent to hell after the first fish on the last trip haha

    Holy sheet

Havent posted a thread here in a while! Here it goes
Been hitting up the shore diving the past month or so.
hit a night dive for a triple and a day dive for a limit
amazing what you can find in 7ft or less of water day or night :D
I usually run into a few schoolies at night during the first month of lobster season, picked up a new 60 recently and will be wearing it on my back this season, they usually just sit there and encourage you to kill them at night. Should be a good season.
Still a lot of good fish around if you know where to look. My little brother blew it on a 40# seabass last week at dusk in the shallows.
Go diving, its going to get cold real soon anyways.
Can't complain too much though I usually run off to baja for a while mid winter anyways
Good luck and dive safe. Grunion runs are your friends ;)

    Mako products I have broken:
    Floppers off shafts
Guns (loading pads off the back getting into a panga)
Bungee's (they rot out completely in about 3 months
    Knives
    weight belts

After i broke the gun I got rid of it, only shooting RA and Seasniper shit now. Wish I had the cash to upgrade the very last bit of mako shit I have to something that can survive a season.
Also any stainless bits and pieces on mako gear rusts like a mofo incredibly quickly.

The army of mako zombies on spearboard who have barely shot their first fish is pretty hilarious too.

Also anyone know who is manufacturing their new carbons? The way those work out for people in the first year should be really interesting to see
