Speargun muzzle velocity

  • Thanks for the Link. That diver is the guy I had looking for on a different video. Saw it a long time ago and lost the link

Deeper Perspectives Episode 16- Shaft Flex - YouTube

From a technical perspective, he did a Good Job with his methods, calculations, and estimates. His numbers match up with a lot of others out there.

Shaft Flex is a whole different area of discussion. All of it is pretty interesting stuff.

  • I watched a few of his videos. Good stuff.:toast:

  • Got a young BSEE that I PICKED to have his first engineering job couple years ago. I was between two candidates. I picked him, Cody... He was hands on being a gearhead and was driving a city bus to work and pay bills. SOLID.

Cody buried me with so many ideas on this project. Need to dig thru them. Young generation of engineers.... They can't think of one or two ways to do it, have to think of 1/2 dozen. I'll get him to do the EE work on this one. A sensor Array is fun part of this one. assuming we go that way.

Project still on track, I'll keep the post updated.

  • UPDATE:

I've been busier than a one armed paper hanger: Been getting so many custom orders, I struggle on knowing what to make next.

I finally got a meeting with my Physicist Buddy Dave (also my Boss at local company) I went over the concept and what I wanted to do.

Anyhow, Dave had some great ideas on the sensor array, I figured he would want to use thin film filters.... We are running some numbers and should be setting up a proto-types for testing with just scopes and other test equipment soon.

Question: The Salinity factor: Dave didn't know, nor did I , but does anyone know if a spear shaft is faster in Saltwater vs Fresh. If so what about % of salinity. Not looking for technical #, but gut feel out there... Figure to test with fresh then add Salt and compare...

Dave wanted a better Test Tank, you got to have that he said. Hoping to have a nice tank in a nice building now.

Design is getting more complex than I thought it would. We are going to start with a sensor array every 6 inches, and plan for 3 inches if data needs more resolution.

Want to get this done my mid-May. In June, we are going to get slammed with a big job.

    Updates to follow.

  • All I know is I got a painful shaft testing it's speed in salt water :@
never had the issue as a teenager, but maybe it was sand.

On average the world oceans are 1.025g/ml in density at the surface.
Fresh water will be a faster medium to test in at the same depth but but over the short distances a shaft or pool-spear travel were splitting fine soft hairs here.

  • Some data for a cold spring night.; best with a good red wine.

    Cheers, Don

  • Almost there, Going to have a 40 foot tank. Got to scale up my sensor array and test.

I'm going to go with a detector array every 6 inches, vs 12 inches I think. Not cost much more.

Ready to start building vs sitting and thinking. Only about 3-4 weeks behind not bad for a side project.
