  • Big cobia look like sharks when you're not expecting them and will scare the shit out of you. Cobia have a strange morphology, they remind me very much of remora. Sometimes I think that cobia start out young as remora and then lose the suction organ when they reach adulthood. Maybe that would explain their tendency to follow fish that remora normally stick to. Until now the bigger cobia I tried to eat didn't taste good, too fishy. The last one was a small one that Pantoja cooked up and it was alright.

  • Most of the time cobia spearin takes different gear than the standard 1st an second reef gear.
Cobia seem slow and weak until you screw up and shoot one in the ass. Now you got a fight on your hands an you better have a reel or float line or a scuba tank or you're gonna loose your gun or the cobia.

  • They will always stay with their host, so you don't have to rush; just follow the stingray (preferrably) or shark. Try to shoot thru the head from top down and they won't fight too much. Greekdiver knows all about this fish, I got the info from him.

  • Not much to cobia, once you see them they are pretty much yours. You can haul ass up to them and they will only come to you faster.

  • the few cobias over 20 pounds i shot never had a kill shot on them, but for some reason they kind of freezed after the shot. hardly swimming or fighting. but once i pulled them close enough to grab them, thinking the story is over, they wake up instantly and start fighting like not much other fish.
always bend up my spear and jumping all around. i find they are one of the strongest fighting fish.
i like to eat them, eat them from 20-60 pound, and find they are very tasty.

  • Some interesting facts about cobia in Florida is:
    1. They grow at 13lbs a year
    2. live 10 to 15 years
    3. Migrate up to 15miles per day
    4. Florida state record is 103lbs 12oz

Anyone know how to attract them or find them off Ft. Lauderdale /Miami?

  • I think they taste too fishy as well. If I see one I would shoot it but probably end up at a relative's house or neighbors. I find them easy to shoot, their inquisitive nature makes them easy to hunt. They are very strong fish and have a high tendency of bending the shaft when you are trying to handle them and they are not tired yet.
