Spanish mackerels for dummies

Spanish mackerels here in Miami / Ft. Lauderdale are mostly a midwater predator fish.
Many times I don't see them because I'm focusing on staring at the reef below me an not looking up.
Many times have I looked up to see one just passing me an giving me just 2-3 seconds to get a shot off before they glide out of sight. -
too right.. my favorite fish on the reef. They have so many habits i wish i could explain
-
Their blood really attracts other fish is the only thing I've noticed. Bleeding them and icing reduces that "fishy" taste as well.
-
This is my favorite fish to spear and eat.
As Dan once told me, when I see one just swim stright to it and it will give you a shot. This has always worked.
I now see a mak dive dive fast swim toward it they swim away for a few feet then turn back to look and that's the end of them.

in trinidad and tobago waters never ever saw or heard of spanish mackerel.
here we rarely seeing kingmack, and if we see them they hardly over 20 pounds, if you see a 40 pounder that was the sighting of the year. hard to see them, but much harder to shoot them here. never give you the shot.they are the most difficult fish to shoot of all fish in tobago. i shot maybe 3 in the past 5 years. the biggest 12 pound. linefishermen in trinidad catch kingmack regulary 40-60 pounds, but divers never even see them in the same waters. seemes to me very strange. but we have plenty cero mackerel sometimes, and big ones too. 10-14 pounds is good size for them. -
i think we call cero macks spannish macks locally.
-
nah, cero and spanish are different...i 've never seen a spanish...the cero have yellow spots and a yellow stripe.......spanish just have yellow spots
-
yeah but i mean what haus refering too, and what ive called spani macks.. idk though i may be wrong.
i know that what i spear and call a spanish is a cero,, and chances are haus refering to the same thing. -
top is a cero and the bottom is a spanish
-
spanish are usally a little larger too, no?
-
based on the tiny little ceros ive been seeing hahaha, yes , they have to be

I don't know about the averages..I'm sure they are on the FWC site
-
yep, they are not the same fish. here the cero normally have 2-4 pounds and swim sometimes alone and sometimes in unorganized schools of maybe 20-50. anything over 5 pound is very good, 10 pound and more is a trophy. they are not so difficult to shoot. how big the spanish normally get ?
-
tinu---one of my references says that the Florida record for spanish is 12lbs and the record for cero is 17lbs.
I know that they are different fish but I thought that they were close enough to being and acting the same that I could say "Spanish mackerels for dummies"and cover both species. Maybe not.
Does anyone use chum / fads / or any method to draw mackerels into shooting range?
-
i have heard of one technique....but it is a guarded secret.
