Square PVC pipe for speargun rack

  • I don't have any stainless, but I have some 1.5" square (1/8" wall) and 1.25" square (3/32" wall) aluminum that you could have if you can't find anything locally. The 1.5" tube has square corners, and the 1.25" tube has rounded corners.

  • Exciting it is not.. maybe I'm too tired to feel excited. but I made some interesting progress. These U bolts are sized weird, meaning it's hard to tell which measurement is the true diameter. I tried a few places, west marine and pep boys, none came even close. Add to that the further specification that it has to be SS and I don't want to chance buying something online, they're expensive too.

So I found some stainless steel ones in Home Depot. One size was very close, just a little smaller than my frame tube diameter. So after I got them ($3 each) I opened up the U bolts a little and bend them back around the top tube of the chain link fence, it happened to have the exact same diameter as my frame tubes. Of course there was no saddle so I made one from starboard. That whole thing grips hard. Now I just got to find a suitable bar. But I don't like the the thought of having a bar jut out like that..

Which brings to mind an important point; everything on a boat should be rounded, I mean there shouldn't even be corners.

  • I wish it was daylight.

Good things take time, your right you don't want pipe in the face, put a nice gun butt on the end.
How about a starboard rectangle with a padded end? Or a ellptaical loop with out ends to kill you?
The muzzel end is placed up into the halo then lowered into the bace plate you have.

  • I completed the top bar for the gun rack. After I finished the U bolt and saddle I went to Sailorman to look for a bar or a pipe. I settled on an aluminum pipe because it doesn't make a sharp end and the PVC caps fit it perfectly, and it matches the aluminum frame. It's sits very solid on the frame. I believe if someone were to fall on it though it would twist making it less likely they'll be injured. Putting the bungees on to hold the guns is a secondary matter.

    Total cost:
    U bolt Home Depot $3
    PVC caps Home Depot $1
    Pipe Sailorman $7.50
Starboard I had a small scrap piece from before.

  • Dan, how about some 1/4 wall reinforced vinyl tube sleeve to act as a chaff guard for the gun barrels?
If you look back at my gun rack images you can see the blue poly bungies and split vinyl sleeve
on the top of my gun rack. Look's great my the way.

  • Don, it's not something I'm concerned about with my guns. I look at them as tools and scratches are part of the deal. Also refinishing them is not a problem. But I have to consider other people's guns, they may not feel the same way. Also further eliminating any clanking noise will be good. So, what is this vinyl sleeve you speak of?

  • Home Depo give me a hr I'll find it. Should be a bunch around the Reef tank in the other post.:D;)

Some day you may not want to not chew up on of these.

  • Nice. I can't tell how the bungies are attached. Do they have hooks, or are they loops? Do you carry spare shafts? Maybe include a piece of 1-1/2" PVC pipe for everyone to put their spare shafts in?

  • Thanks.

The bungees are attached with these black plastic eyes that you can see in the last pick. The eyes are riveted to the bar with ss rivets. Then the bungee just loops around the gun and the end of the bar.

  • If your out in a real big wind, I know you pick you weather, but if your out and get your tail caught.
Pass a safety line though all the band of the guns just in case some thing breaks.
The rack looks great, if you do a PVC shaft tube for guest's shafts:@ make sure you take them out
after the trip to rinse them.
I like those black bracket guards. That vinyl wall/floor edging works for a lot of stuff on a boat, great chafe guards.

  • Don, how big do you figure the seas have to be to start popping those spearguns out of the rack the way it is now?

The seas can be dead flat and you just happen to cross some one wake with a deep drop.
I would go with what you have and add or mod as nessary.

    Cheers, Don
