Need help locating shafts

  • In my quest to build an American styled rear-handled wood gun that shoots SA round notched shafts, I overlooked a small but extremely important aspect, the shaft; particulary how the shooting line attaches to the shaft.

The gun is semi-enclosed track, therefore not allowing for the traditional shooting line anchor point at the end of the shaft. I need a round notched shaft that has full fin tabs with a hole in the lead tab to anchor the shooting line.

I would like the 7.5mm spring steel, tri-cut shafts with three tabs. 2 is acceptable, but I would prefer three. Does anyone know where I might be able to locate such a shaft? HAU?!!! I know you just got your ETPG, so what kind of shafts are you using?

  • Also not quite what you asked for, but another option if you want a 5/16" shaft instead of 9/32" . . .

I could take a standard stainless shaft, and re-cut the notch to a euro configuration. It would shorten the back (move the fins rearward) by about 5/8".

I could do the same on a spring steel shaft, but then you wouldn't have the coating to prevent rust.

  • Jeff,

might have to go that route. The 7.5mm shaft falls in between the 5/16 and 9/32, kind of an oddball size but I really like it. It's the same shaft I brought today.

I just sent Erik from Sumora a message to see if he can help me out.( The same shafts I left with you today.) They will work, was just trying to find the 3 tab configuration as stacking bands on those tiny fins is not possible. Would still work with 2 bands, but it kind of defeats the purpose of building that gun. Wanted three for the extra punch and range. if worse comes to worse, I will just get a hold of Mori and have him make me 5/16 shafts with 3 tabs and a round notch.

  • John maybe I missed it, but how long do you want the shaft and how many ?
My local dive shop has a over stock of RAs I believe, some have slip tips.

  • Is it too late to swap the trigger mech, so that you can use the KJ and new Wong shafts?

That might be a possibility, so long as the dimensions and the retaining pin holes line up. The gun has already been cut and is ready for finish and final assembly. The mech is the Neptonics Reef mech.

  • I have a square-notched version of the Neptonics Reef mech handy, and the housing dimensions appear to be identical to the Euro version you have (length, height, pin dimensions, etc.). So I'm confident that it would drop into place.

But I don't know if the shaft height for smooth engagement would be exactly the same?

  • John, why was it important for you to go with a round notch mech? The only reason I can think of is to use the new spring steel tabbed shafts. Why did you want to use those?

They are much cheaper to purchase and the spring steel is much stiffer than SS. I also like the tri-cut tips.
Sqaure notched shafts of this type only recently started to be produced. I purchased all the components some time ago.

  • I've straightened a lot of shafts. When you do this you become kinda' intimate with the shaft material. I have an RA 7mm shaft here that I've bent and straightened with my hands various times. I didn't find it any more difficult to bend than a good SS shaft. The not rusting becomes the deciding factor for me. My :twocents:
