New Member in La Jolla

  • Hello to all!

I'm Jay Dee, 22 yo, and have been recently enjoying the wonderful sport of spearfishing. I just started going out about 4 months ago when I got my own polespear and license. I must say that I'm hooked. I'm an avid ocean enthusiast and have always enjoyed fishing with my dad so after a few of my college buddies picked up spearfishing they finally got me into it. I've been blessed to live right in the heart of La Jolla this past year and am attending UCSD where I'll be starting my 5th year next fall (just finished my Econ degree and ENVR studies minor, starting an accting minor!) Considering the proximity of my home it's been incredible to utilize the beauty we've been afforded in this area.

The past 4 years I was a member of UCSD's men's crew team, I love rowing and now train at SD Rowing Club on Mission Bay. If there's any rowers on here, say what's up! If anyone wants to come and learn, DO IT! All are welcome and it's amazing.

I've got the utmost respect for the ocean, the power of it, the animals and life of it and just see myself very fortunate to be capable to enjoy it. Much respect for you all out there too for all your knowledge, respect and success. The spearo community seems to be a very close-knit and an extremely generous and accomodating group, which I think is awesome! I'd love to learn from anybody that's local.. I plan on attending the next SD freedivers meeting. LJ Brewhouse is right by my house!

Enough about me, let's get out in the water! Looking forward to seeing you all out there... oh if anyone's in the finance/accounting realm I'm looking for an internship in that area (thought I'd throw that out there haha) Thanks everyone!

    Best,

  • Welcome Jaydee, That is a great intro. I used to love to row my row boat back on the east coast but out
here I just do it on my machine.:( I did manage to row a 13' grand raid Zodiac with broken 60 horse outboard from the middle rig's mid channel to Seal Beach with only a liter of H20 on a hot summer day, what a goat'F.
Have a great summer in LJ and good luck in the water.
    Cheers, Don

  • Thanks Don Paul! That's awesome you used to row! I'm sure you know the love/hate relationship we have with the ergo then? :) what a great way to stay in shape though right!? wow!! that's quite a ride. I'm from Long Beach originally (Bixby Knolls) so I know exactly what type of row that was. Got my start rowing out of Long Beach Rowing Association there at Marine Stadium... hope the water wasn't too rough! Thank you very much, hope you've been getting your share out there as well. I'll give you a hoot if I'm back up in the area. I usually shore dive though...no boat or money haha.

  • Jay, did you ever go into Limerick's Pub pup on 2nd ST. ? Mike O Toole used to have a vintage Olympic shell
that he had to cut the front wall to fit over the bar...... Good times had by all.:D

    Cheers Don

  • Nope, I know exactly where it is but cant' say I've been there. That's awesome though! Those old shells make for some cool decor, especially in places like a pub or restaurant. Many TGI Friday's have them in their locations as well... That's really cool though, I'll have to go in to take a look and grab a beer! 2nd street is always a fun place haha..

  • Mike sold the pub two years ago. but moved the shell to his Italian restaurant in LB. He also owns the gondolas in Naples Canal. We would go to the pub after Chanel swims with a 40' Flaming Dragon at Xmas time to warm
    up.
    Cheers, Don
PS I hope Dan doesn't see this and ask for a picture.:D

  • Don: Oh ok.. I thought that name sounded familiar! I worked at Gondola Getaway 3 summers ago now, I was only there for a short time so I never met him, but that's awesome! haha, That's cool that you are so familiar with the area down there. I love it there, the bay is awesome. If only there was good vis there haha. Have you ever dove LB breakwall??

    Dan: Thanks!

  • thanks a bunch guys.
Don: I'm sure you slayed it. haha

No I just do it the first day some times, I haven't learned to stay out of the caves, so now that I have a kid I head south to the coves and points.

    Cheers, Don
