Hey guys i'm a south florida native living in the carribean island of St. Maarten now. I try to snorkel 3-4 times a week. I've been a long time angler and seeing nice size snapper around me everyday got me thinking about spearfishing. Trying to get my feet wet in this new world so any advice from you guys would be great. Im looking into getting a pole spear and the ray odor ones are cheap and easy for me to get. Any advice would be great.
What is going on guys

thanks man this forums great, i've been lurking through it for about 2 hours now.

the odor is a good spear, its just very heavy so it takes some getting used to. Get a 3 prong paralyzer tip for small fish (>5lbs) if you plan to shoot larger fish get a slip tip or flopper. I most frequently shoot my odor with his 30" tip on it.

I was just about to call him and ask him to include the paralyzer into the order. I hope the learning curve isn't too bad. Thanks for the response.

its not bad, if you learned shooting hollow aluminum polespears or fiberglass cheapies then it might be a little more drastic, but if your learning with it then there won't be anything to compare to.

welcome...you will be fine with the odor, it will take some time for your hand to adjust to holding the sling...that is the toughest part of beginning the polespear adventure.
some people hook it over their thumb, others tie a knot in the sling and place the loop over their four non opposable digits.
I am a thumb guy personally. all preferrence though.
i would also get a slip tip so ou are able to take shots at the grouper that are around the islands as well..paratip is a great learning device as it hits in a much larger area...just plan to swim the fish into the ground or reef with follow through to keep it on the spear..
post som pics of your beach to make us all jealous too

Judah you can hold a 1/2" band over your thumb fully stretched?!? you are a MANIMAL my friend! my double jointed thumb just folds back against my wrist so I use my other 4 fingers, but on long days when my hand gets sore I've even placed the band between my index and middle fingers.

I can but it is tiring. I actually use a 10pm band which is thinner but I tie a knot in it making I quite short. I have a smoother release with a thinner shorted band than a thick one. Just my experience. The stock band on the odor is perfect with a know tied in it for my float line to attach

Judah, you'll have to show me the method for the pole spear one day. I tried using one in the Keys a few weeks back and had almost no power/speed from it at all. It was a nice spear too, don't remember the name, made by a guy in Arizona I think.

My only friend with a camera is a bit ridiculous but that's a typical trip after class for us. Took me about a month to respond haha but better late than never.

So i finally ordered the odor after figuring out the regs on the island. Being an idiot i asked everyone but the people who work at my diveshop. Apparently it's allowed everywhere but the nature reserves which is pretty much all of the french side.
