Good afternoon! It's been a LONG time since I have posted here. I first found this site when I moved to Ft. Lauderdale in 2008 and met some awesome people who brought me into the world of freedive spearfishing (Lunker, Hau, Dan, Ben etc).

Sadly however life and school has drastically limited my spear time the last year or so. BUT, I am now living in Key West and working as a SCUBA instructor. Being on the water every day blowing bubbles and guiding students on reefs inside the MPA/No take zones has me itching to get back out hunting apnea style!

My breathhold needs some work but I was on the Vandenburg this morning working the deck and was able to hit 40 fsw sans a weight belt so it doesn't suck as bad as I though it would :thumbsup2:

I don't have a boat (Yet) but do have a kayak (plastic Navy!) and a board for shore dives; or as always cash for gas! So if anyone in the lower keys wants to get out and shoot some fish let me know!

    :toast:

I think I am going to make a rattle, PVC with bb's inside, epoxy it all closed and ill experiment with it

Tie it off my float line, use it as a noisemaker on my person, put some flasher tape on it and use it like a flasher. Ill see what I find and report back. I think I have all the parts at home already

Remember too that sharks are particularly attracted to such vibrations. :D

I would imagine there is some scientific validity to this. I know predatory species are conditioned to react to the vibrations that an injured fish can omit (the reason for rattle traps as Lunker pointed out). Be interesting to see in action for sure.

Man, reading through all these post is making me depressed, lol. Everytime I think I can get out the weather or school blocks me! Gills are getting very dry here.

Lunker, or anyone, want to get out this w/e for an early dive let me know. Would love to get some in the cooler before residing to the lab for the duration.

I typically just shoot them with a para tip, lip them, and snip off the fins with shears. It's easy to do, even at the surface.

What time and where are we meeting up?

Mike, PM/text me your number so we can link up Friday.

Well if the wind doesn't lay down by tomorrow then it will certainly be mixed up pretty good for Saturday. I think weather wise we will be fine; I just think we may have to contend with vis issues.

I am down with whatever is decided.

If we scratch the dive though I propose some makeup beach activities or trying to hunt anyway; just not in the tournament.

They are more nocturnal feeders and tend to keep rather stationary during the day typically hiding under rocks, ledges, etc. Just have to stick your head down and look.

We'll definitely need good lights and backup tools in case the gun isn't a good method for where they are holed up.

Anyone know a good LF tool we can make easy/cheap?

Pole spear I think will be key.

Edit: Mike I can make the capt meeting probably. I just need to run to the oceanographic center in Dania after work to check on a project (ID and measure some fish) but I pass 17th on the way home so it should be no prob.

Ok so who is in? I will register the boat before the 27th so we avoid the price jump. essentially its $25 a head plus gas. PM me your name, cell number, and I will get us registered. We can hand in the waivers at the meeting on friday night.

    PM sent.

Get on it Lunker! Invasive bastard fish are gunna die!!! Beers and lionfish BBQ to follow!

japsw, that is true but I think it's obvious they are also raising money for their NPO. It's a good cause and I like to eat lionfish so I am in!!

I am a SCUBA and freediver; but I'll be free diving as well. I can always bring the bubble gear in case we need to move out deeper.

I am open no the 30th and always willing to toss in for gas! Let's kill some invasive fish!

It's a $100 team reg. fee till the 27th. We get one more person and split it 4 ways.
