new/b member

  • Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum. The only reason I joined this place was to gain access to the bikini thread. :thumbsup2: Now that I'm a member this will probably be my first and only post.

....I'm only kidding although the bikini thread was good incentive. On a more serious note. I have been lurking the forums for quite some time just reading threads and trying to learn. I found this forum upon recommendation from Don Paul. (nice guy) .. he gave me a call a few weeks ago to tell me about some equipment I was interested in and we ended up talking about this forum. I'm glad he led me here. I appreciate the research everyone does here. There is a definite quality vs quantity vibe.

I'm very new to spearing and I am still learning. I'm from Long Island, NY. So if anyone is interested in taking a newb with them feel free to let me know. I was also able to get six of my friends interested in the sport so I might be able to get some people to tag along.

As of now we have Ray Odor pole spears (yes yes i know, Dan, it's slow and heavy) from my research I'm hoping it will fair well in LI waters (low vis, rocky, smaller fish). We are all trying to start slowly and learn the right way of spearing. We are all on a tight budget so I'm on the hunt for good affordable equipment. Which brings me to my next subject. We are in the market for wetsuits. I read a lot about the Pursuit wetsuits but I want to know more such as, what type of Sheico rubber the Pursuit wetsuits use? I'm also curious to know how the Pursuit wetsuits compare to the Mako Yamamoto wetsuits? (construction, quality, fit, durability, customer service, warranty etc etc)... If anyone can give me any feedback on this it would be much appreciated.

Thanks again for having me. I look forward to hearing from everyone and reading your threads.

    Best regards,
    Tred

  • Welcome to the forum.

Don Paul is more than a nice guy, he's the embodiment of the spearfishing spirit :)

It's the smaller fish that require a light fast pole spear. The heavier pole spear has an advantage with big fish that are slower to get out of the way and require more penetration/punch.

  • Welcome Tred, I don't have any suit specifics for you, but I'm in Minnesota which means we have somewhat similar weather and temps and I will say that I just tried out my new 3mm Pursuit top and bottom this wknd and was comfortable and stayed warm in 54 degree water for about 20 minutes before it was time to go, so it wasn't a long test. I will most likely buy a 5mm suit sometime later for colder water and/or ice diving. I hope this helps you make an informed decision on buying your open cell wetsuit. You won't go wrong with buying a Pursuit wetsuit.

  • Welcome. You're doing well by starting with a pole spear. It's what I did until I was confident that I wouldn't kill anybody with a gun. I can attest to the quality and durability of the Pursuit wetsuits, having been tossed over some sharp rocks with one on.

Thanks, where do u hunt? what mm suit are u using?

  • Awesome info guys. thanks...

Does anyone have an idea at what depth the Pursuit suits will compress?

Also, when are the 5mm suits coming in stock?? I've been looking for a while but haven't seen anything available in my size (small). I read that they would be in stock by the end of last month. I hope they come in soon. I'm also looking into seeing the float lines that are supposed to come in.

Thanks again for the help. Also when will I be able to PM people?

I'm somewhat of a newbie myself. I haven't done any local hunting yet, but plan to start this summer. I've been traveling to do all my hunting. I have a black 3mm Pursuit suit that I was wearing when I got rolled by a wave into some sharp rocks in Costa Rica in April.

Sounds good man. Let me know if you make it out to Long Island... Hopefully I will have a suit by then :confused2:
