Speardiver 7mm suit comparison

  • I'm looking for a new wetsuit, my 5mm is almost 3 years old and is extremely thin. I miss being warm. I think I'm going to get a 7mil suit this time, and a Speardiver wetsuit is one that I am looking at. I have seen that many people like their suits, but I'm curious to see how they have held up so far. I'm specifically looking for people that dive like me - lots of beating up your suit on shoredives and little extra care.

I'm also interested to hear comparisons by people that have used the apnea suits sold by gat-ku as that is what I am most familiar with. Pricing and specs seem very similar.

    Thanks!

  • Ya my 7 mil is thrashed and I will need a new for next winter most likely. I just bought a 5 mil a few weeks ago and I forget what kind it is cause I have only used it twice.

  • Don Paul has one and that thing is primo. No loose threads, no tears. I know he shore dives quite a bit now with it.

On a side note-the weight vest that Pursuit sells is great also. Helps to de-clutter the weight belt, especially on a 7mm suit.

You ever have any issues when it is choppy as far as keeping the chop out of your snorkel. I guess what I am
Asking is how much weight do you use in the vest

  • Speardiver wetsuits have open cell neoprene on the inside. For those not familiar with open cell, it's smooth neoprene without a lining. It's the material that needs to be lubricated with a mixture of water and hair conditioner to allow you to effortlessly slide the suit on. Lack of interior lining allows the suit to be much more flexible/comfortable than a double lined suit, and completely eliminates water circulation inside the suit which translates into warmth. Open cell neoprene is sensitive to tears. But the only time the open cell neoprene has a chance to be damaged is when putting the suit on carelessly ie. grabbing the neoprene with fingernails and pulling, or storing the suit inside out.

At all other times the Lycra lined outside of the suit offers the same protection and durablity as the best lined scuba suits. The lining resists continuous abrasion such as when sliding in and out of a kayak, and occasional serious abuse like being rolled in rocks by the surf.

The seams are very well glued, with the glue having high heat resistance. This means your suit will not come apart if you leave in the car on a hot day. The stitching is also top notch. I have never seen our suits come apart at the seams.

There is full length elbow elbow protection, and knee pads, both made of supertex. Basically the suits are very durable, comfortable and warm.

  • If you like Apnea suits you will love a Speardiver.

I have pretty much worn Apnea suits from just before they were released up until I got a Speardiver, last year. The cut is similar but I think the Speardiver is slightly more contoured (anatomically cut) The neoprene is much softer and therefore, much more forgiving in the fit. They are very warm. I cant even wear my 3 mm until the water hits the mid 70s or I will roast. I also have a 5mm and have only worn it once. ended up taking off the pants and removing the hood because it was too warm. water was in the high 60s.

Mine has held up quite well considering that I pretty much only dive barnacle encrusted oil rigs:D You wont be disappointed.

  • Once you start diving with a weight vest (properly weighted) it becomes an essential piece of gear.

Thanks I have been looking into them for a while. I would presume it makes you initial dive much easier and quieter and less weight on your belt so there are no sliding issues. Just took a look and I think I will be ordering one when I can get in the water again.

It puts the weight over your lungs where you are naturally most buoyant. Less stress on the lower back. The Speardiver weight vest is a good product. Dropping down is smoother.

Back wt plates were used by a lot of world champion speros going back 20 years. The soft vest with the 6 pockets spreads the wt over a much larger area. Just remember to take it of before you pull suit over your head.
