Went out yesterday to Laguna Beach for a quick lobster dive on a reef I know well enough. Vis, waves, and swell were all perfect as far as I was concerned. I bet I could have grabbed my limit if I stayed out longer. But I didn't want to take a bunch of bugs today, so I called it quits after 3.

Testing my new gopro hd camera.

First I bought the Mako Spearguns polycarbonate flat lens to go with my gopro. And I'm already thinking I should have bought the Pursuit glass lens. The poly lens scratches way too easy.

Low light capabilities are very limited compared to my old point and shoot SD550. Using the same dive light it is very noticeable to me. I don't think I'll be using the gopro very much for my night time diving.

However I love the headmount strap and the one button record feature. It was super easy to swim around the reef and dive into caves with it on my head. I doubt I could do that with such ease with any other camera.

I was recording at 1080, but for rendering and uploading purposes I'm going to stick with uploading at 720 to save some time.

I did ruin a couple videos cause the angle of the head mount wasn't quite right. Next time I'll try pushing the angle further down and see how that goes.

So far I'm liking the gopro. The video quality is very nice when there's enough light and the headmount feature makes it a perfect for my kind of diving :thumbsup2:

  • Wow the structure you guys have is crazy!!!! the more videos of Cali that I see the more I want to dive there.... Need to get used to that water temp though... oh yeah and Pursuit>Mako

  • Awesome..you will get the angle of the head strap dialed in...i like to align it with my mask only ever so slightly forward.

and yeah, mike...cali blows my mind

  • If it was screwed into my mask I bet that would work. But the head strap is kinda hard to adjust like that when it's on your head. I just have to get used to feeling the right angle. Since I'm paranoid in the water and adjust it multiple times.

  • Thanks for making me look bad Daniel.

Not as bad as me..;) I have only dive in LB for the bugs but baseball ends in two weeks.
I love that spot Daniel, you hit it on a pretty day for sure.

i cant imagine you can do this yourself, having a buddy is huge...put on your camera, then mask, i like the camera under the mask strap, but not your hood yet, then adjust the camera to be just beyond the mask and tighten down with a screw driver...then hood... it should be aligned for you from then on.

I forget mine is there a lot of the time

I was really lucky the conditions were so nice. I went back out at night and the waves kicked up pretty bad. I heard Dave Plossel got his butt kicked on a reef and lost his fin diving Laguna last night.

I dive by myself 50% of the time, so unfortunately I'll have to learn to put the camera on by myself anyways.

But thanks for the tips. I might try that next time I go out with someone.

  • which Laguna site did you dive?

The one that's getting closed on January 1st

dude those holes look super tight! Looks like it took u a little to get out of the first one! Thats some crazy stuff!

ha yah I had to wiggle a little to get out of there. I'm starting to get a little more adventurous in my diving.

But if you want to see some really crazy stuff, check out the Southern California master at lobster diving, Dave Plossel

  • His other videos about the proteators are pretty funny!

  • great video. I really enjoyed it. Gopro or any small camera will always do terrible in low light conditions. There is not enough light coming into the lens to give appropriate video.

  • Yes Dave is a former life guard and master of the cave. If guys with less experience try to get their skills from the internet the next Utube may be tiled: ''Freediver perishes in 6 feet of water''. Even a buddy who is right at your 6 may not get you dislodged if anything snags. Please leave this for the few that can cheat death and make it home to their loved ones. Yeah I've done some stupid shite as well, but make sure you guys don't get your tail caught. We have a long life of skindiving ahead of us.

    All the best, Don
