Pretty cool! Seems like a pretty effective way to catch em. Around here we target them at 400 feet in 900 feet depths. Why are they on the surface there?

Why are they on the surface there?
To recover?
To improve digestion in warmer water?
To shake off remora which often cling to them? see picVid was taken on "Hell Hole" a spot located on north east channel.
Probably the only area on the blue planet you may spot the fish on the surface in summer
About 5 to 10 fish every day!Tagging studies there show they like to swim on the sea surface at regular intervals during the day (about every one hour) then rapidly diving to 600/ 900 feet depth. Best conditions: sea becalmed, 63 C deg. water and full moon....

Thanks for the info! One of the best tasting fish for the grill.

Very interesting Virgili, thanks for sharing. I had the same question as bulit.
What does the tip of the harpoon look like?

Lilly head.;)

Ah the same one Virgili used for the tuna, handy little bugger Thanks Don.
I can see it having great holding power. But also making a shaft take a curved trajectory past 10ft.

yes and it works better by using this set up (less fish meat teared )...

That is how we do it out here in California.

very cool vid...it is nuts that a pelagic fish like that will allow a huge boat to motor right over the top of it like that...very cool

They are warming their brains and bods after being in the abyss, but the one I swam up to woke up from a bad dream when I tied to get close enough for a good film image. I won't try that again.;)
Cheers, Don
