Possibel White Shark at Shaws today

  • My buddy, who is a lifeguard in Laguna, said a swimmer had a run in with a white shark today at Shaws Cove.

Sounds like the MPAs are already working. :rolleyes1:

  • I've seen small basking sharks there.... way out at 3rd reef, out side the farthest kelp stringer, along with whales,
7Gill, Soup fin, and of course Leopard sharks. In thousands of dives between Reef Point and Salt, I have never seen a '' real shark''....that would be cool.:thumbsup2:

I'm not saying they don't swim past every outcropping point as they move up and down the coast, just never got to see one.

See if you can get more background on the story and the spotter if you can.
I do remember some clue less tourist filing a ''Shark Attack report'' claiming a Mako bit him on the foot in the surf zone. twenty years ago.

  • Well according to my buddy the "swimmer" was no expert and there is no way to know what it really was. I know there was a small salmon shark seen near there a few months ago.

I think Mike E or ScienceMike saw a real shark between abalone point and reef point a while back.

That makes allot of sense, El Moro has lots of huge bat ray and other snacks along with being close enough to the New Port Canyon and drop off.

mike e spotted one off el moro, i think he was with sciencemike and possibly anton if i remember the story correctly.

another time me science mike and dave p were diving honeymoon cove in pv, and me and mike were working the sand channel in about 30-40 feet of water on the outside. the clearing between the beds off the points were stacking up with TONS of bait and i was hoping some yellows or whiteseabass would come moving in with dusk. who knows where dave was, he was off being dave and i hadnt seen him in a while. i was doing aspettos on the sand watching rivers of bait flowing above me. mackeral sardines choves, everything was there. i noticed after a few minutes that mike was no where to be found,m and i was out there alone, i hear mike yellling something untelligiable and see him standing on the shore waving his hands around franticly. i yelled back.... I see all the bait too, im gonnna shoot a yellowtail. i then realized he wasnt pointing at bait. i swam in and mike was white as a ghost. i cant remember if dave got out before or after me, but we were all there on the beach, and mike told us he had seen a 4 foot tall forked tail buzzz by in the 15 foot viz, and couldnt see the business end of the fish. i guess he started screaming and bombed it to the shoreline, but i was off doing my thing and never heard anything untill i saw him on the rocks tryin to wave us in. part of me wishes i had seen the shark...part of me is glad that i had no idea it was there. i wonder how often we get buzzed and never notice.....

  • I've been buzzed by a few "real" sharks before that I have not seen, but others have. GW at East end Cat, Grey reef at Kaui, mako on a paddy, and bronze whaler at SCI (Which I turned around at the cry of my dad and a 6ft shark was 5 feet from me coming right at me!)
