A real do-it-all dog, probably our next breed....ever worked with them ?
Ever worked with Airedales ?

Haha never! But a good friend of mine owned one and I knew him pretty well. I believe the Airdale terrier is the attempt to harness the tenacious and explosive aggressive terrier temperament and create a dog that can direct this aggression towards people instead instead of game. All in a man stopping size dog. As far as I know the experiment was successful. I think Airdales were used by the military and police.
I think you gotta love terriers to own a real one. What do you want it for? I don't remember them being used for hunting although any thing's possible. Probably not jumping into a freezing lake to retrieve a bird though.
I stumbled on this forum a long time ago. Since the Airdale is not a hugely popular breed the people interested in it should be a pretty serious group of owners. For this reason alone I kept the link. You can learn stuff and apply it to other breeds http://workingairedale.proboards78.com/

FRom what I've read so far , Dan, they are a bird to bear kinda dog. Still studying....and they have been used as a military/police dog. In fat, most of the info I've gleaned has been from a k-9 security website.

The nastiest experience i had as a decoy was with an Airedale, i was wearing a French rim suit (Whole body) when the dog was released I lost a step , cause i began to ran with the wrong foot, the dog did´nt give me the chance of turning back and landed in my back knocking me down, he took my arm hard from the lower part of the triceps and gave me a nasty bruise that i had for almost 20 days. Those are some serious working dogs... they are a hassle to trim though.

Monster, what's a French rim suit? Is it like a rim job from a French hooker?
I didn't know you did more than schutzhund :good: APPORTE! :dogattack::D

A French RING suit hehehe. I am too hairy to look sexy in one of those though...

I am studying that aspect....
Yup, also they tend to have a short life span and suffer from kidney problems.

My research has them as hardy as any other dog with similar life expectancy.... however, you've been around 'em in actuality. So I'm researching a bit more.

The one that belonged to my friend lived a long full life. There was a lot of dog hair in his apartment. Terriers are spunky dogs, you gotta love em' to own one.
-
Sorry to derail, but what about Dobermanns?? Around here is hard to find a good one, but if you get to find the right one, those beasts are serious working dogs too. I like their speed and lightning fast reflexes, that would be my pick for a full attack dog.

Why I'm thinking they might be viable... got just enough property to keep their energy levels at bay and enough outside stimulus to keep 'em sharp.
And a completely tiled house to address quick hair clean-up....:) Hell, could trim them by the fireplace without leaving much of a mess.
Still researching,though.

Yes it's hard to find a good one, but a good dobe is a great protection dog.

Aaron, I made a contact through a working dog forum with an airdale breeder. He says he has hunting airdales. Here's his website http://www.huntingairedales.com/ Here's where you can see his pics http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v401/hicntry/ password is hunter

I feel giddy like a match maker. Let me know the prices for the dogs if you end up going that route.

Aaron, I read some more posts from that man who's website I gave you the link too. It appears he's very serious and has a lot of knowledge. One of those people who understand the heart of a dog. The airdale forum I initially gave you the link to is on his website, maybe belongs to him too. What a coincidence. I think this man is definitely a good starting point in the search for a good airdale.
