Shaft Line Storage

  • So I came up with this idea a couple nights ago and I thought I'd share and maybe get some help to make it better.

-The top one is just a 1/2" PVC tube cut on opposite 45 degree angles. Wrap the line around and I used a hair tie to secure the line.

-Middle piece is same, but with cable. This was actually the first one I cut and the cable coincidentally was the perfect length to just hook the loop on the shaft pin.

-The bottom piece is more of a final product, but requires more work. It has an integrated cap for the speartip and I wanted to make the tube longer to minimize the amount of turns on the line. The inside 45 degree cuts is for the last bit of line and is just far enough apart to be able to stretch a hair tie over the line to keep it from unraveling.

The design isn't perfect. The cuts are good, but I'd like to get ideas on securing the last bit of line. The hair tie (or rubber band) would work, but I was hoping to just tuck the line on itself, but it doesn't stay. Don't use the thin 1/2" PVC like above, it's too weak, there's a thicker one (SCH 40, I think). If I bang the bottom piece against something, it will break at the weak points.

So, I'd like to develop something SIMPLE and very EASY to make. Maybe this is good enough and I thought you guys would like it. It cost a total of $2.68, and I have a lot more PVC and caps to make more.

  • I like very much that you're thinking in this direction, I've spent time on this too, and I wish you'd find a solution. But the conclusion I came to is that whatever you come up with, if it's going to be compact enough to make a difference, the line will have to be wrapped in such a way that it will kink, and that's unacceptable. So I ended up coiling the line in the smallest loop it will take without kinking, running the last length a few times through the coil, and zip-tying the coil to the shaft. You end up with a shaft and relatively small coil securely attached to it, that doesn't unravel, and I believe is no less compact than your system, for sure lighter. That's why I shake my head when I look at the omer line holder.

I wish you luck with this venture though. Isn't PVC the shite? :D

  • When traveling I do the same, except I put the coil in a large ziplock. My PVC shaft tube has a cutout that allows the lines to hang out and still thread the end cap on.

  • I do coil the lines, but that's actually a pain to get just right and it always wants to unravel. Also, I want to store and use it frequently, I don't like keeping South African Steel shafts in the gun, but I always do.

Instead of zipties, I used tape. I also used twist ties, which works the best, but they'll rust. If they just had stainless or aluminum twist ties!
